NY motorcyclist dies on ride protesting helmet law
NY motorcyclist dies on ride protesting helmet law
http://news.yahoo.com/ny-motorcyclis...143217859.html
State troopers tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y., was driving a 1983 Harley Davidson with a group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets.
Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed. The bike spun out of control, and Contos toppled over the handlebars. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

As those of us who ride motorcycles generally say, and mind you I wear a helmet regardless, but most guys I know say if I'm driving 75 MPH on a motorcycle and get into a wreck how the hell would a helmet save the rest of my body?
Fun factoid, I have had to replace 2 helmets that fell from my hat rack to the floor of my house because they broke.

When they hit the ground while you are wearing them...they often break too...instead of your head.

He might of survived and been completely paralyzed too, or he might of died anyway.
They don't mention how fast he was going, they don't mention the type of surface, which I'm guessing was pavement but don't know.
Bottom line, if you want to wear a helmet, wear one, the state doesn't need to force you.
It's a good idea not to eat fast food every day, maybe we should ticket people who do that?

I always found it strange that, in a car, you are required to wear a seatbelt, yet, on a motorcycle, you are not required to wear a helmet.

The difference is that the state owns the roads, therefore they get to make the rules. If you don't want to wear a helmet, you don't have to ride on public roads.
The state has an obligation to protect people to the best of their ability. I get that your point is if you want to go out and kill yourself, it's your business, but if you were in a public place and put a gun to your own head, believe me there would be a swarm of cops, fire, and medical people there to try and stop you too.
As for the fast food comparison, they are privately owned, profit-making organizations. Of course they want you to consume their product, and if it kills you, then you can sue them. That's America!
Happy Fourth of July!
