5 months ago I left Ron's Redbird Cafe. The reasons are many but to save alot of bored reading I'll just say I was tired of covering lazy people's shifts with no gratitude or ramification. I like my time off and love my family too. There was alot of lazy BS going on there and I have no respect for anyone there except another manager. She is Ron's sister BTW.
I have waited tables because of no call no shows. I cooked in the middle of a rush all by myself. I have scrubbed puke and turds in the bathroom because noone else would do it. I could go on.
I had enough, I walked out. I called a manager and told her to come in 'cause I quit. She was shocked and tried to talk me to my senses. I was angry and it was too much. A cook was to boil off ribs for baking the day before, he didn't, sat on his ass all day.
I left and was so relieved! It felt like I escaped from prison. I went and got my last check 4 days from my walking out and that tool took 60 bucks from my check to replace the locks to the building. I called the labor board and filled out the paperwork and still no money. I did get a letter from the labor board and they told me I had to file a return statement from Ron's excuse why he took the money.
Basicly he told them a "disgruntled employee" had the keys to the place and was worried I would break in. If I had keys why would I break in? Anyway I'm going to wait 2 more days before I return my paperwork just so I calm down. Cooler heads prevail. On the other hand, I just want this to be over, and 60 bucks ain't gonna make me anymore better off or hurt me.
What would you do?

In the case of employers taking money, I don't think this is something you should let go because this means he's done this before. It means he'll do it again. You don't owe anyone anything, but if I were you, my conscience would be heavy to make sure an employer understands he's an employer and not Caesar.
Stand in front of the place in protest with a sign that lists all the most disgusting secrets about the place.

Do you still have keys? If so - go see if they work. If he didn't change the locks then he is obviously lying about it to pocket $60.
Also - without using keys (which could be viewed the wrong way) could you demand proof (from the labor board) that he spent the money he kept from you? Seems reasonable. If he paid to have the locks changed he should be able to produce the receipt, right?

No I don't have the keys. I turned them in when I got my last paycheck. I didn't notice the deduction until I got home. My check was in an envelope. I have seen no receipt whatsoever.

I'm noone to cause a scene, I'm too cool for that. Plus there is an old Japenese proverb that speaks of revenge. When you get revenge prepare two graves.
But what I can do is blow the whistle on the tool. I personaly know 2 employees right now that draw social security benefits that get paid under the table.
I speak nothing but truth about my situation and would love to bring the horse down.
Duane Molohon lives in Girard Il. draws a stupid check and works 20 hours a week at 7 dollars an hour. (the MW law is 7.50$ per hr.)
Amanda Belino draws a check for being bi-polar she lives in Virden Il. I know what the waitresses bring in and its way overboard what she is allowed.
Let me just say it, "I need some help!"

I feel your pain. I had a employer that would regularly short people on there checks because we basically worked on commission. I kept good records of how much my checks would be and always got my money. When they started bouncing checks was the last straw. I stayed on long enough to get my last big check and they quit. They still tried to rip me off of a couple hundred dollars.
I did what you are doing and went to the labor board. They tried to paint me as the 'disgruntled employee' trying to take advantage of them the 'innocent victem'. I almost laughed out loud when the head of the board pulled out there file and gave them a rundown of all the cases against them. The guy told him "you don't really want to go there"
Keep up the fight because they are trying to steal your money.

Then you should definitely ask to see proof of when the work was done. If you turned in your keys prior to that, then I'd say you have a pretty good argument. Of course, your tool of a boss could always say you had duplicates made.
