Am I missing something?

You'd have to rip the songs at such a low crappy level that it wouldn't be worth it - so you aren't missing anything.

Actually, you could buy a laptop drive too, which would be a lot smaller than the ipod. You can get a 40 gig laptop drive, that would hold more songs than you would need.
Just my opinion but the IPOD is definitely worth the money. The interface is great, it has most features that you can ask for, and the sound quality is excellent. I use mine all the time and for me, it is worth every penny. I don't believe in the adage that more expensive is therefore better but in this case it really is true.

Well, that isn't the same thing at all as an iPod...the iPod has an interface to play the songs, and then you can plug it into an Aux in the car and play through the stereo.

What I meant was, that someone out there should market and sell a device that you can plug your own hard drive into. The device would have be the interface part, all you do is buy the drive. That way, you can select how much storage you really need. Besides, the drive is the part where the real cost is.
How big is the drive in an Ipod? 40 gigs? 120 gig drives cost don't cost more than a little over $100 these days.

Ahh, that's a great idea man.
The iPod I was looking at had a 10 gig in it.
I'm thinking now about getting an MP3 CD player instead, and just burn MP3's onto disks...
We're going on a big road trip up the California coast in February, so I'm trying to find the best and cheapest way to bring a ton of music with us.
