MP3 players?

Anyone have one of those 128mb MP3 players? They say it can store 4 hours of music, but if you do an average of 4mb per song, that's only 32 songs.

Am I missing something?

You'd have to rip the songs at such a low crappy level that it wouldn't be worth it - so you aren't missing anything.

So the thing is, I want to get my wife a MP3 player for christmas, but these 128mb seem like a joke.

So, how can I get my hands on an iPod and not spend $299?

The Ipod is basically a hard drive with an interface to sort through the songs.

Someone should market an mp3 player without a drive, so that you can buy your own hard drive and plug it in.

For $80, you can buy a bigger hard drive than you will ever be able to fill with music.

Actually, you could buy a laptop drive too, which would be a lot smaller than the ipod. You can get a 40 gig laptop drive, that would hold more songs than you would need.

Or, you could just get an MP3 playing walkman. You can get around 100-150 songs on one CD with decent quality sound.

Just my opinion but the IPOD is definitely worth the money. The interface is great, it has most features that you can ask for, and the sound quality is excellent. I use mine all the time and for me, it is worth every penny. I don't believe in the adage that more expensive is therefore better but in this case it really is true.

Well, that isn't the same thing at all as an iPod...the iPod has an interface to play the songs, and then you can plug it into an Aux in the car and play through the stereo.

What I meant was, that someone out there should market and sell a device that you can plug your own hard drive into. The device would have be the interface part, all you do is buy the drive. That way, you can select how much storage you really need. Besides, the drive is the part where the real cost is.

How big is the drive in an Ipod? 40 gigs? 120 gig drives cost don't cost more than a little over $100 these days.

Ahh, that's a great idea man.

The iPod I was looking at had a 10 gig in it.

I'm thinking now about getting an MP3 CD player instead, and just burn MP3's onto disks...

We're going on a big road trip up the California coast in February, so I'm trying to find the best and cheapest way to bring a ton of music with us.

You can buy a car cd player that plays mp3's now too. I think they have come down in price.

So if you wanted, you can just get one of those for your trip, and then burn 4 or 5 cd's.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking...and a CD holds like 700mb, which is a ton of songs.

Didn't you post a while back that you got one of those funky new honda square things? (name escapes me)

I am surprised that they don't put an mp3 player in dash standard in those cars. They look hip enough.
