Has anyone seen this place in person? My wife and I were in Flagstaff last weekend and we drove over to take a look. We were blown away by the size of the crater. We took a tour around part of the edge and he said that 20 football fields could fit in the bottom of it. If it was a stadium, 2 million people could fit around the walls of the crater to watch.
The history of the crater was also very interesting. Back in the early 1900’s they tried several time to mine the crater because they believed that valuable rocks where buried below.

Not to far out of the way, cheap, and very interesting. Doesnt take long to visit it as well so the Kids wont get bored.
If you ever go towards Tuscon for any reason check out Kit Peak Space Observatory. Its the place with all the big telescopes on a mountian. Nice drive and cool place if astronomy is your thing at all. It to is pretty cheap and the tour is a must.
Our guide said NASA comes out every September. He said that nobody knows what they do there, and nobody would even know they were there, except for the white tents pitched out on the northwest side of the crater.

I think they film the moon landings there.

Grew up 1 and 1/2 hours away and went to school at NAU. Never been there. Never went to the Grand Canyon until about 6 years ago. My dad always said it was just a big hole in the ground that looked like the pictures. I'm probably permanently damaged because of it.

My parents had a second house in Flagstaff we would go to on the weekends in the summer. I never went here, but we went to Wupatki and Sunset Crater a lot.
Definitely want to check out meteor crater at some point.
Yes, they brought that up during the tour. I think that after the filming of Starman, they banned anyone from entering the crater (except for NASA). He said there were a few other movies that had previously used the crater for their film, but I can’t remember them.
Ive lived in Arizona my entire life and have never been to the meteor crater or Kit Peak, but after reading about the crater on Wikipedia I think I should make a quick trip to see it soon.
