Looking to get a humidor

Looking to get a humidor - maybe big enough to hold 25-30 cigars. I see ones for around $50. Any idea on what makes a good one? I don't smoke cigars much, maybe a few times a year....

any help would be appreciated. thanks

I've smoked cigars for quite awhile and average about 5 per week. That being said, I usually don't have cigars around long enough to require long term storage. One thing I've found is that it takes an exerted effort here in Arizona to maintain proper humidification. I've actually found that wetting a paper towel and putting it in a plastic baggie inside my humidor helps quite a bit.

As for what humidor to buy, first off, the "you get what you pay for" tag applies. Cigars are an investment and should be treated as such. I would recommend that if you are going more for the long term storage, then look to spend at least $100. Second, buy a humidor with a capacity of at least twice what you plan on storing. It improves air flow and helps when that box of Cubans gets dropped in your lap. Slotted shelves also help with air flow.

Hygrometers are the key. Most of the ones in the lower end humidors are worthless. My first humidor (when I was in no0b status) held twenty five cigars. The hygrometer was in the inside of the top lid and I couldn't close the box without removing cigars and making a gap where the hygrometer would sit. I would recommend either a hygrometer built into the front face of the box or a humidor with a large enough capacity where the hygrometer doesn't come near the cigars. If you can afford it, a digital hygrometer is the best for accuracy. I personally own a barrel type humidor, it looks like a treasure chest with a glass top, and has built in front hygrometer, slotted shelves, and a drawer underneath for storage of cutters, etc.

Order it online from a place like www.cigarsinternational.com. They have good prices on everything. Examples of good humidors on their site would be the Napolean and the Versaille.

And if you're ever in the market for some Cubans, let me know. I know of a place. Guaranteed authentic and honest pricing and shipped to your door in under 4 days.

Steady humidification. Some cigar stores sell "basket case" cigars which are completely dried out and I've seen some folks bring these back from the dead. And I mean dead.

There is a device that you can buy at any cigar store that you insert into the butt end and test for dryness. That is what I use when I get the feeling something is wrong with my cigars. If you have some that are bad now, I would take a gallon size ziploc and put the cigars in. Then take a folded paper towel, and generously wet it, and place it in a smaller ziploc. Put is inside the gallon bag leaving the smaller ziploc slightly open to let moisture escape. Zip the gallon back but make sure the gallon bag is loose enough to let the air/moisture flow and within a couple of days or so, maybe a week, the cigars should be back to life. I have used this method in lieu of a humidor many times and it works just fine. You will notice the paper towel getting discolored if every thing is working okay. This is just the oils in the cigars releasing and a good sign that the cigar is coming back. If you buy a humidor, then transfer them over after that to maintain the 70% humidity all cigars desire.

One thing with cigars is that are really touchy little buggers. Just a slight difference in humidity and age can change the taste and burn of a cigar. Most "pro" smokers will humidor cigars for years before they smoke them to get the proper aging and moisture. And, when buying cigars that come in the plastic wrappers, remove the wrappers immediately and humidify them. They have basically been drying out since they were packed.

Nice selection! If you haven't received the humidor yet, or if you have, before the cigars go in, you need to take a clean wet sponge or towel and liberally wet the interior of the humidor, but not the shelves. This will help raise the humidity until you're humidifier can do the job.

The sampler you picked is top notch. The Gurkhas are well made cigars.

Those Cuban Honeys are awesome. Everytime I go to order they are sold out. So, i bought some.

Here is my current favorite. I prefer mild cigars with a good construction. I find that the medium to full body cigars are harder to keep and the flavor fluctuates too much. Plus, the wife hates the heavy smell. These cigars are well made and well worth the price.

CI will send you email every week with the current. Most of the deals have been pretty nice and it's tough not buying everyone I see.

I've spent a lot of money with CI. I support several soldiers overseas and try to send out cigars every couple of months. They love kicking back with a good cigar after an especially taxing day or when they get some downtime and play some cards. CI really has the best deals on the net and I've never had a bad order. Hope you find their business the same.

very cool & thanks for the great info. I should get the stuff later this week & I will do exactly as you said.

I have the same taste as you & it sounds like our wives are alike too - lol.

I also bought some more today at a new cigar shop down the street. I checked out their humidors & all had the gauge in the lid & the cheapest one was $399. It was good construction, but way too expensive.

I should be stocked pretty well come this weekend! Thanks for all your help!!!!
