Instead of giving something up, I try to just make a concerted effort to be nicer to people. Makes Lent into a positive thing instead of a negative giving something up thing.

i'm going to make myself get up early a few times during the week and do something productive before work. i tend to drag myself out of bed at the last possible moment, so this will be tough.

I used to do that too, a lot of years.
Now, I do both. Habitat for Humanity has a little thing where you put in a certain amount for your home each day (like, say you put in .75 for each TV in your home one day, $1.50 for each bathroom another, etc) that we are taking part in.
I like taking away something that I do that isn't good for me, and replacing it with doing good for someone else. I actually kind of look forward to Lent.
