Kids and Computers

Maybe this should go in tech forum but I figured more would see it here.

I was looking for some advice regarding my 6 yr. old and my computer. He is now to the point where he can read and type and understands using search engines on the net. I try to supervise and whatnot but I can't be around all the time to make sure he is not subject to something a 6yr old shouldn't be on the internets.

He likes reading stuff and watching funny videos and playing games. He was looking up Star Wars stuff the other day and there was some Star Wars gangsta rap he was all into and to say the least the language wasn't very appropriate for a 6 yr. old. So that is what started this dilemma.

What do some of you do or what would you suggest I do to attempt to keep him away from certain things? I know it isn't totally escapable but I really need to do something. Thanks for any advice in advance.

Seems to me like he's just spending too much time on the net. You don't want him to be on as much as I am at this age.

Google can make it so you can filter some sites when you use the search engine so other places must have that and I don't know exactly how, but there are ways to block certain sites.

Put your computer in the family room where everyone can see the screen and don't let him use it unless you are in the room.

Makes it a little tough when you want to look at stuff on the computer but sacrifices are part of being a good parent.

Thanks for the help. I should have stated that I have one computer that he won't be able to go on and another computer which I want to set up with just my music and for him to use. I am developing a plan and the wife and kids are gone for a week starting on Sunday. I should be able to get something sorted by their return.
