So I start the first half of my sabbatical(8 weeks total 4 weeks the first half) in mid Feb. So of course last week I got jury duty notice for the 2nd of my 4 weeks. My initial reaction was I can't morally ask out, I am available, inconvenience is not an excuse even if I have stayed at my job for 6 years to be eligible for this paid sabbatical.
Everyone I talk to is telling me I'm nuts, you should have said financial hardship, say you're going out of the country(true but on the 2nd half of my sabbatical), ask for an extension. I didn't ask for the extension because it would have just pushed it back to when I plan to take the 2nd half(hoping to go to Australia if my girlfriend can work out getting the time off).
What's the general opinion would the normal person in my position just lie to get out of it?
I should note, I've had jury duty 6 times in the last 8 years. once I had to go, for a half day before being dismissed, the other 5 times I just called in every day and never got called. Once I got called in the wrong county and called up and they dismissed it so its' actually 7 times in 8 years. Part of me would like to serve on a jury but to be honest I don't want to give up a big chunk of my sabbatical on jury duty.

Six times in 8 years is way out of bounds. You should only be called once every 2 to 4 years.
