Theoretically it is because it's "peer reviewed."
If I go on the page for Al Gore and make up all sorts of claims about him I absoulutely CAN post them and get them on the page. But the first time someone else reads the page and says "when was Al Gore arrested for tax evasion?" they will simply forward it to the appropriate person and the page will either be edited, or a note will appear saying that claim needs confirmation. If it's not confirmed in the required time, it's gone.
So the accuracy of it really depends to a degree on WHEN you access a certain page.
I've seen stuff on pages I know is not true, for example I corrected 3 mistakes on the Kurt Rambis page a few months ago. 2 of them stuck, one of them got deleted because I wasn't able to verify it even though I know it's true. IIRC it was that he was the conference freshman of the year at Santa Clara or something like that, can't remember.
Edit, would it be wrong for me to cite a wikipedia entry as proof of credibility of wikipedia?
