When I’m in a left turn lane and I just have a plain green light I never inch forward into the intersection. I enjoy watching the person behind me creep up on my bumper and get irritated. I don’t understand the need to pull forward just to wait for the intersection to clear. I’d rather just sit where I am and wait for the intersection to clear. Why bother with inching forward?

If you ever see a brunette in a white Ford Escort screaming at you to the point of nearly having a breakdown--let me apologize now.
(At least you go. The screaming comes because the person behind you doesn't know that you're going to go once the intersection clears. I HATE it when people sit through the whole light w/o going...)
Because once you are in the intersection you are guaranteed to get through on that light. The cross traffic has to wait for you to clear.
For a bigger intersection two cars can fit through on a yellow.
Of course this reason is why I like lagging arrows. That kind of inching out isn't necessary and cars are able to fill up the turn lane while the light is green.

But once I see the yellow, I inch out. What’s the point of inching out when it’s green?
If you are already in the intersection you can complete the turn to clear the intersection.
Once it is yellow you are not supposed to enter the intersection if you can stop safely short of it. If you are behind the line when the light turns yellow you are supposed to wait for the next green light.

Because by doing so you allow more cars in the turn lane per light, therefore more people turn on average at that light, not waiting for you to get to the point where you should have been to wait. Slow starts, etc.
You, unintentionally, are increasing the commute time of people and making the traffic worse.

If (hardly ever happens) I have to wait for a yellow, the person behind me always follows me through the intersection. You're going to have to blame the commute time on someone else my friend.
Because it allows multiple people to turn! And you are ready to turn if traffic clears!
As a model of efficiency, I get out as far as I absolutely can to ensure the maximum number of vehicles can clear a green/yellow.
BTW, I never liked the term "Defensive driver". To me, that says you should go out and hit other cars, slow them down or change their direction. I prefer to take a point guard mentality out there; trying to facilitate safe and timely driving conditions for all.
I hate being out there in the intersection. You’re absolutely helpless to avoid those morons that run red lights.
Wait a second, you are saying that you hate being out there in the intersection, because you are worried about red light runners? That makes no sense to me. Unless you are in Scottsdale, you receive an arrow to turn left after the perpendicular traffic stops. If I were afraid of red light runners, I would be afraid of being the first to turn on an arrow.
If not, are you really worried about red light runners 10-15 seconds after a red light, and the turn arrow stops?
If you are worried about traffic from the opposite direction, they still would have to cross the center line in order to hit you.
Using red light runners as an excuse to not pull forward and let other cars get in an intersection does not make any sense to me. Mind clearing it up?
