If you were me would you complain here or let it go
So our regular receptionist is on vacation, in Turkey of all places. Before she left the temp came in and trained, she had 2 appointments already scheduled so she made plans to leave at 5 instead of 6 on those days. This affects me because the lobby doors auto lock at 6, so I had to go in manually and lock the doors(so you need a cardkey to get in) on these days. So the regular receptionist and I had it all planned, on my calendar. Last Thursday temp leaves at 5, I lock the doors manually, no issues at all.
So this morning I ask her your next appointment is today right, because I'm moving cubes and kind of hectic so I wanted to make sure i didn't forget. She tells me she's not sure, one of the admins came up to her yesterday and said she was a temp and should not be leaving early all the time. She explained why she had to go and that it was pre-approved and the admin told her, if you leave tomorrow, I will call your boss(he works remotely from Texas he's in legal but is currently over HR which is who reception reports to). He will
call the temp agency and they will never send you out here again on an assigment!
She's afraid if that happens it will cost her other assignments so she's just going to skip the doctors appt. I have half a mind to call the guy in Texas myself and tell him what a biotch his admin is being and would he please call the temp and tell her to go ahead and leave at 5.
Very few visitors come that late, the phones are very slow, last Thursday not a single issue arose because she left at 5. I lock the doors so only people with a badge can get in, so it's not a security issue. She's not asking anybody to cover for her so it really has almost no impact at all if she leaves
early.
I think it bugs me because the receptionist is one of my best friends in the company and she was very careful before she left to make sure everything was covered while she's gone. So this "incident" would reflect
badly on her if it escalated. So I'm not only tempted to butt in to stand up for the temp(who's maybe 22 and afraid to make waves), but also to stand up for the receptionist who's not here to defend herself.
And yes both the receptionist and the temp are cute but I assure you that's just a coincidence. and no I don't have pics of either.

Do you know the Texas boss? If so, call him. If not, tougher call...but I might call him anyway--not ratting out the biotch, just letting him know that the temp is concerned that people might be wondering why she's leaving and that it's all been pre-approved.

I agree. Also, do you know the admin who is giving her a hard time?

I know all of the parties involved. What I ended up doing was emailing the guy in Texas, decided wasn't worth a phone call but I wanted him to at least know what was going on so if he decided to get involved he could.
It's a really trivial thing but it really came off as "bullying" to me. I could understand if the admin had to cover for her but she doesn't. She's one of those people that is always telling others what to do and that probably has a lot to do with why it bugged me too, that I expect it from her.
I basically told the guy in email that we had pre-arranged this situation so that the temp could make a doctors appointment and now she was being told that if she left early to make that appointment she would get an unfavorable review from us to her agency. I said I felt it was unfair given that she was very up front about the whole thing and that she had in fact tried to make sure this was ok before finalizing the appointment. I pointed out that our regular receptionist had even sent me a online work request to lock the doors early on those days to make sure I didn't forget it, I wanted to make sure he understood this was entirely pre-planned and that the only reason he didn't know about it was that nobody felt it was important enough to bother to call him in Texas before and ask him, until this admin made it an issue.
We'll see what happens. I guess that's my good deed for the day.

If someone pre-approved this arrangement and it was a known condition of hire (or lease in this case) I would be very careful about telling someone that they cannot make a medical appointment as long as they meet the prearranged conditions. If the admin did go and complain to the agency and the employee could prove that this affects her livelyhood there could be some fireworks, if not some unfortunate paperwork, coming the companies way

Ahhh, nothing like somebody on a power trip to stir up office politics. I especially love it when the tension gets so thick you can taste it walking to the coffee pot.
You did the right thing Russ. This admin sounds like a biotch.

Good point. Ironically enough the boss in Texas is the company legal counsel, he just got stuck with HR too after our VP of HR left.
So he probably wouldn't have done what she said anyways it's unlikely he would have called the agency for the very reason you say he probably realizes it could get us in trouble.
I just don't like people power tripping. This person has worked here once before, a temp we had hired showed up for training one day, and then never showed the next day. This person came in and covered for her and everyone liked her so they actually specifically asked for her when they were arranging to cover for the vacation.
So to conclude, legal guy in Texas agreed that it was stupid and told her to go ahead and leave early for her doctors appointment. HR person here who reports to the guy in Texas also said they would be having a talk with the admin who caused the whole issue because they didn't like her threatening a bad referral they thought that was extremely out of line.
