In 3 days, my mother in law is officially moving in with me. Shed owed a few grand in past due rent... it was either pay that and revisit this in a few more months, or have her get back on her feet and get a better job while living in our house.
I always knew this day would come but feel like a small piece of me has died and that I need extreme therapy to recover. No amount of square footage can help eliminate the feeling of evil in my home. Will she ever leave again? Will I ever recover the lost feeling of self respect? Can I ever show my man card in public? Can I ever feel like a normal family unit again?
Being the eternal optimist I can see good out of this. 1) I have a babysitter anytime I need to go away with the wife 2) I have the ultimate get out of jail card if I ever really f-up, I can throw this right back in my wife's face and she can't say a thing
Regardless, I'm feeling crappy about this whole thing. The woman is 45 years old and hasn't a dime to her name, I can't help but feel that I am now serving a life sentence

you're not alone...we just purchased a new home and my wife's father is retiring next year, so her family is moving in with us...we get a long great, but...
wow. sucks to be you. I think your bright side points are VERY valid, however. Also, fortunately, your mother-in-law is very young (all things considered) and should be able to get back on her own still. I recommend walking around the house in your boxers whenever possible. That should motivate her ass j/k.
OMG dude, have you identified a local bar you can hang out in yet? Possibly put some friends on speed dial with some kind of code like "I wrecked my car". Then your buddy can yell "Oh No! Ryan wrecked his car! I'll be right back!" to his wife then you both just meet at the bar. The third time you wreck you may need to change things up a tad.
My in-laws also live with me and somehow I got talked into letting them have the master bedroom because they have 2 large computer desks and they would look tacky in the living room. What the hell happened.
The good news though is that she is getting sick of her mother and I see this coming to an end in the next few months.

Not to be an ass Ryan but why did you feel you had to move her in? Why did you feel an obligation to pay her debts? Why do people in general feel the need to bail people out of their problems?

So you would bail people out just simply based on the fact that they are family? Sorry for you.
If I had bailed out my sister and step mom for that matter everytime they needed their back rent paid and needed a place to live I would be out of a house and any savings I ever made as well as a wife. Family isnt a scapgoat for getting handouts.

Before I got divorced my mother-in-law moved in. It was actually nice for a while, provided a buffer. Now they have my house and I live in an apartment.
