How important are health benefits?

Well, my health coverage officially terminated yesterday. Now I have some decisions to make as to what stuff I continue with through COBRA and what I think I can live without (until I become gainfully employed again).

The standard HMO coverage is $380.55 a month. Ouch. Unfortunately, I believe it is wise for me to get this coverage. Better safe than sorry, right?

The dental plan is $42.16. I'm leaning toward getting this as well because 1. it's not that much and 2. you never know when you're gonna get a tooth ache.

The vision is 57 cents a month, but I just went to the eye doctor before I moved here and am good to go with supplies and whatnot. Pass. (Hooray, I get to pass on the cheapest coverage, lol!)

Okay, now for the prescription plan. It's $113.31 a month. I am only on one kinda prescription that I renew monthly and it is much cheaper than $113 a month. Plus, I renewed all my renewable prescriptions before I moved out here, so I have my own little personal medicine cabinet. I can probably pass on the prescription plan, right?

Also, if anyone has a good doctor that takes Aetna, please let me know. Gracias!

Yep. You could always drive down to Nogales. Many drugs are cheaper there. Believe it or not Mexico also has decent dentists. Four or five years ago my dad went down there to get a root canal (and we had insurance).

In fact as long as you have plenty of free time you may as well go down to Nogales anyway (especially if you've never been there).

screw the prescription plan. get generic & there's no way you'll spend as much as you'll be paying out.
