Names of Injured Metro Officers Released
March 1, 2007
Metro police have released the names of the two officers involved in a deadly shooting earlier this week.
Officer Dale Jones, 52, was grazed by a bullet during shootout Monday morning.
Officer Ricardo Lara, 27, was shot by the suspect and remains hospitalized in serious condition. Thursday, a family member of Officer Lara spoke only to Eyewitness News.
The latest is that Officer Lara came out of surgery Thursday morning. It is a difficult time for not only the family but also for the entire police department. The camper Metro has set up at University Medical Center for the officer's family symbolizes the tight-knit family bond that officers share.
The family is relieved that Officer Ricardo Lara survived. He was ambushed at a home near West Sahara and Cimarron by a suspect who fled from police. He was shot six times.
The family prepared a statement thanking the community. Officer Lara's brother-in-law read it.
"On behalf of the Lara family, we would like to thank the entire community for its support during this most difficult time. Officer Lara is in serious but stable condition and is continuing to improve. Once again, we would like to thank you for your continued support and prayers," Peter Gariano said.
Gariano emphasized that Ricardo is a hero for protecting the community.
"Ricardo was 27 years old, a Las Vegas native and an all-around good kid. He always wanted to be a police officer, sure enough wanted to become a police officer and served his community well," he continued.
Gariano is a Henderson marshal. He doesn't speak for Metro, but it's clear the incident hits close to home for many officers.
"Sheriff Gillespie and the officers when they say they are one big family, they mean it. There must have been 1,000 officers here to show their support in the past two days. We are so overwhelmed," he said.
The camper the department has set up is a much needed temporary house of prayer.
"Ten-thousand things have been running through the heads of the officers that have been in and out of here and we just pray that we are safe every single day," Gariano added.
Officer Lara, he says, is one of many heroes.
Instead of flowers, Officer Lara's brother-in-law says the family would prefer donations be made to the
injured police officers fund.
