Has anyone ever been to Alaska?

I am traveling to Alaska in 2 weeks for business and I have never been there during the cold periods, so I don't know what to pack. Do I need anything special like snow boots? Can I get by with dressing in layers or do I need like a parka or something.... I really don't own any winter clothes so any help would be awesome. I don't plan on venturing out into the wild, rather from the airport to my hotel and to the building and back again via rental car

I'll be there for a week... It's Anchorage and the temp was -1 last time I checked

I'm actually excited because the Aurora Borealis starts during March so I hope I can catch a glimpse

I was in ANC two weeks ago, snowboarding at Alyeska Resort. Which is 40 miles south of ANC. Temps were warmer then about 25'F. I spent sometime in downtown ANC. They had snow on the ground, but at the time it wasn't enough that warranted boots, sneakers were fine. We did some walking in downtown at night and I wasn't really cold. I had my leather jacket on and was fine. At -1 I bet you'll feel the cold.

My buddy that I went with grew up in Alaska. If you have any questions on where to go or what to do, let me know what you're looking for and
i'll ask him.

I use to live in Girdwood, home of Alyeska and worked there.

So much to do, you will kick yourself if you dont go and see some sights. You might want to check out the Beluga in cook inlet if you are there during the time.

A real Eskimo wouldn't have to ask these kinds of questions.

Get a good ski parka and wear 2 or 3 layers underneath.

None of my Arizona winter clothes were good enough for temps below 20 degrees even with layering.

Without the proper gear, the wind can still cut through layers.

The locals will try to sell you various kinds of jerky (elk, reindeer, whale, etc...), but if you buy some don't eat it until you're on the plane back home.

Bears can smell it on your breath even days later and will come out of nowhere and eviscerate you. I've seen it happen. Man is encroaching on nature even in alaska, and that spells trouble for unsuspecting, jerky-eating out of towners like yourself.

Eat a lot of jerky, I hear it's great.

Just in case you were on the fence about it, I made up everything in that post. Everything.

I just watched an episode of Man vs. Wild where Bear Grylls was helicoptered onto a mountain in Alaska. Then he skied down a glacier and found his way to the shore. You might want to watch this episode before zipping up your parka.
