Happy Birthday Internet

The core of the present day internet (WWW).... not counting the ARPAnet years was officially published 15 years ago yesterday on a newsgroup by Tim Berners. Making the web project freely available to the general public.

It's really hard to imagine life prior to the internet. Reading the newpaper and getting day old news... using the newspaper to get movie times. Watching the evening news to get updated on current events..... Working

Not to thread jack, but how long have you all been on the Internet?

I had Prodigy in August 1994 and also used Mosaic to surf the web around that same time. I was a freshman in college and taught myself to code HTML within a year.

My first "internet" post was on rec.sport.basketball on usenet and my topic was fire Jim Harrick, pretty sure it was 1992. Can still be found on google's archives of usenet.

The local paper had a little blurb today that was picked up from a
Santa Monica paper. Apparently the rumor is Jim Harrick will be given
a one year extension at UCLA, should the Bruins get a bid to the NCAA
tournament.

Ouch.. I don't know which would be worse, UCLA not getting a bid, or
getting a bid and then extending Harrick's contract. Lets face it,a
one year extension is pointless for recruiting. Nobody who is afraid
to commit now(O'Bannon) will be put at ease knowing who their coach
will be for one year. It would take a 4 year extension to accomplish
that, and they don't have enough confidence in Harrick to give him that.

Don't look now, but this year could be a sign of things to come at UCLA
if they don't make a solid decision after this year. A one year commitment
is a good way to kill next year's recruiting too.

I remember going on the internet in 1994. W used AOL, had a gateway computer (mooooo) and I used to go in the pre-teen/teen chat rooms.

After the recent 5 game losing streak,it is apparent that Jim Harrick
is in over his head as head coach and should be removed now before he does
more damage than Walt Hazzard already did. I know he can't play for the
players, but this year's team is the most unorganized team I've seen. They
stand around on offense like they don't know what they are doing. They give
up uncontested shots on defense cause they don't know whether they're
playing man or zone. And what ever happened to "the famed 2-2-1 press"
that Jim said he was bringing back.

Obviously, Pooh's improvement was due to the lure of NBA money, not
Harrick's coaching. I really feel that the loss of assistant coach Paul
Landreaux to St. Mary's hurt them as much as losing Pooh did. It is
obvious that Landreaux not Harrick was responsible for the defensive
improvement last year cause this year's defense sucks. Once teams found
out that playing man neutralizes Murray and Madkin's, our offense has
sucked too.

The future isn't much better either. Not making the NCAA's will
kill our chances of signing Ed O'Bannon. Hopefully Rodney Odom can
play center next year so Murray can move to forward. I would expect the
guard play to improve with age(2 sophs, 1 frosh) but Mason is a bust
and nobody else is worth talking about. We'll have a hard time competing
with Arizona with that lineup. Why not hire a local guy like Willie
West from Crenshaw to at least keep some local guys at home. Can you
imagine what Roy Williams or Paul Westhead could do with this team.
We should be a top20 team, not NIT bound.
