Golf question

While we're waiting for the Cardinals to sign a few more guys, I need some help. I'm playing with 9 yr old irons & a Nicklaus 440 driver. I'm going on a golf trip next month to Florida & I want to upgrade. The Nicklaus driver is OK, but I have my eye on the Cleveland Launcher, Cobra SZ, Titleist etc. My irons are knock-offs, so any purchase would be an improvement. I'm looking at MacGregors, Nike Slingshot & TaylorMade Rac. My handicap is 12, I'm 47 yrs old, 5'6", 190 lbs. I'm sneaky long, tendency to hook on bad days. I'd greatly appreciate some insight from people on this board. I'm sure Phoenix must produce some really good recreational golfers. PLEASE HELP, I'm so confused!!!!!

No to Nike Sling Shot.

The Mizuno M23 are very nice irons and perfect for your handicap range. The cavity back increases the lower the iron. The Ping G2's are the best but more expensive. The Mizuno's can be had on the internet for a song. For drivers Try a Ping G2 or a Taylor made 580 ( last years model, but really good). I have a Titliest 983K and I love it. Remember 9.5 or 10 degree loft is what you are likely looking for. If you have a range where you can test the clubs, obviously that is the best. Have fun.

Hey PA,
Hey I'm actually a golf instructor here in Phoenix so I might be able to help. First of all I'd say get fitted! thats the most important part of choosing new clubs. Most amatuers dont get fitted and are playing epuipment thats not suited to them, i.e. incorrect shafts, wrong length etc. Once you've done that I'd say the Taylor Made Rac's are your best bet, little bit more reliable, weighted better and more forgiving. I'd stay away from the knock-offs. You kinda get what you pay for in that aspect. I'd say spend a little bit more and have the quality that will last for years more. Titleist is a good option but most of there clubs are geared towards lower handicappers, 0-9 in that range. Although they dont like to make this public knowledge, lol. So they may be a little harder to hit (less forgiving). Make sure what ever you get that the shaft has been fit to you, shafts are about 85% of the club. Go check out some off course golf shops and let them know what you want. They should be able to take it from there. Let me know if you have any more questions. Hope this helped!

Thanks for your input regarding the TaylorMade Rac's. My swing speed is right around 100, so I'm looking at a S shaft for my driver. What would you recommend as far as a driver is concerned. Are you a believer in the bigger the better? My Nicklaus Airmax is 10.5 loft, 440 cc & it was a gift. It's OK, but at impact it sounds like glass breaking, which drives me nuts. Do you think 460 is too much, should I stay around 440 or should I consider something smaller at 400? Thanks again!!!!!

Thanks Wolverine. The Mizuno's are definitely nice irons. I've never tried the Ping G2, I'll have to test one. The TaylorMade 580 was recommended by a friend of mine also. Thanks again!!

CaptnCard,
I have been using Titliest 981s for a few years now,and your right, you hit them or you don't, but overall I enjoy them. I'm left handed and don't get too many opportunities to try new clubs, so i have a couple of questions. I use callaway woods, older models.
would you recommend an upgrade to either..... adams redline, is what I have been thinking about, for a driver?
5' 6" 150lbs, with a fairly smooth to slow swing speed, currently a 12 handicap.

If you tend to hook the ball, i wouldn't recomend the Cobra SZ driver.THey have a slightly closed face at setup which induces the ball to draw more. I have heard good things about the NIKE slingshot irons but have never hit them myself. A club(s) i highly recommend are those Taylor Made mid-rescue clubs. They are those utility type irons. They are,by far, the easiest clubs i have ever hit.I'm about a 5 handicap, which means i hit plenty of bad shots, and it's almost impossible to miss hit those clubs.

Im not sure if money is an issue, but I bought the Adams Idea irons/hybrid set. For the price I think they are great clubs. You can go to Golf Digest Online and look at thier hot list.

Personally, I love the Callaway X-series Irons. Been playing them for a few years now. They have a 'rifle' shaft that I can hit in a regular flex that tends to keep wayward swings more on line. My handicap-9 and swing speed 98-102 are similar to yours and I love the new Taylor made driver 5 series (not the expensive one with the screw adjustments). Cap'n Card is so right about fitting...get the right shafts for you...Good luck

The Cleveland Irons are also very forgiving. I switched from Ping to Cleveland TA5's, and I couldn't believe the great feel they have.

The Taylor Made R510 Tour Preferred with the Speeder shaft is an awesome driver. Has great feel also. You can get these much cheaper since the R7 came out, and they are an awesome club.

Good Luck on the links, and GO CARDS!!!

I love my Pings. The factory is located in Phoenix and you can get custom fitted at the factory.

I used to have a set of Callaway irons that were about 3 years old. I won a full set of Ping I3 irons and full set of G2 woods at a golf tourney I was in. The Ping irons are great. I had them adjusted at the Ping factory. They are awesome, good forgiveness, and are long. Then I bought a Taylormade R-7. This driver is the absolute best driver I have ever hit. I used to have a slight fade, now I hit high draws that are 15-20 yards farther than my Ping driver. You can get an R7 on EBAY for a fraction of the price of retail. There are plenty to choose from, from brand new to slightly used. Mine was brand new with the upgraded pro style Aldila NV stiff shaft. I received it in 2 days. I was a 12 handicap with old stuff, now I'm about a 9 with this new equipment.
