Golf is good there if you do golf... Most tourist type stuff that involves water, Snorkle, Scuba, Fishing (actually some of the best fishing in the world), boating, and mostly all water sports. Variations in places to go for food and night life are really quite dramatic. You can go from the greatest, cleanest and most enjoyable experience to the absolute nastiest and worst... Of course there are many in between....
I have been about 4 times and the last time I was there it was much different, the quality and cleanliness was about the same but the prices were about 10 times what they were my previous 3 visits... That was about 4 or 5 years ago...
The good thing about the fishing is that the boating time to get to the hot spots are a matter of a few minutes and the charters are fairly cheap so you can get a private boat with a deck hand and a captain at a reaonable rate.
On the fishing point... It is a type of environment that you would not necessarily associate with fishing... Given some easily attainable specifics you can ride the boat without fear of getting sea sick, you can fish without getting dirty or even baiting your own hook... When I go I don't look for those specifics because I love to fish, but I did go there with my ex wife on our honeymoon, she hated fishing and gets sea sick, but we went out and she had a blast...
I like this thread better. The travel thread is creeping me out a bit.
Maddog....just fish...alot....catch some big ol' Tuna....the kids on the boat will fillet it for you for like $5 and you let them keep the head and bones.
I'm going down to my annual Rocky Point trip the week before the Draft. Viva.
We went 2 years ago December I think, stayed at the Finisterra which is the oldest hotel in Cabo. I liked it, my girlfriend didn't feel safe there.
Things to watch out for, we booked online, got there expecting a no smoking room and our room stunk. They moved us to a room that had cigar butts on the ground right out in front, as if someone had just emptied the ashtray in our room. So we moved again. I wound up paying cash to the front desk guy to give us a no smoking room. I'm sure it was a scam but I didn't want to move again so I paid it. that was a big reason my girlfriend didn't like it, we felt screwed right away.
We went to cabo wabo for a Tshirt, but didn't stay. If you go, a known scam there is you get up to go dance or go to the bathroom, and they take your drink away. You come back, ask the waitress about your drink, and she brings you a new one, and charges you. If you refuse to pay, they throw you out. We were told this story by about 5 people either in Cabo, or before we left from people who had been so apparently it's well known. Someone ought to tell Sammy Hagar what happens at his bar.
Lots of great food around. To me the fishing was way overpriced, but then I'm used to Loreto where you can fish for 6 days for the same cost as one day in Cabo. As fishing places go they're not out of the norm, and the fishing there is excellent if you want to catch a marlin or a big dorado.
the things i didn't like was the constant incessant everyone trying to sell you something. Street vendors, kids dressed up like homeless(most often they're not) trying to sell you trinkets, people pushing timeshares. it just gets really old, the one beach we went to I can't even remember the name, the locals call it "no gracias" beach because you are constantly saying no gracias to people asking you to buy something.
it wasn't really my kind of Mexico I'm not a big drinker or bar guy but I did have fun. I just felt it too crowded and touristy but that's more who I am, most people I know who have been loved it.

I would say most of that is pretty true... having been down to so many parts of baja, much of that stuff is kind of expected... I don't leave my drink alone here, let alone in another country... not because they will take it but rather I don't trust that someone won't do something to it...
Cautious is always a good rule, but I believe that is true everywhere... And Russ is dead on, it is not the best place in Mexico, it is not even the best place on the penninsula... But I still like it...
I guess me and you just have different expectations from an Official Travel thread.
If Maddog would have said, "Dudes, I'm thinking of going to Mexico, does anyone know of any cheap airfare and hotels?" Then you could hook him up...that's what I'd expect from a Travel thread.
But he said, "Dudes, I've made up my mind, I'm going to Cabe....what is the best way to get really wasted really cheap." That is where we come in and help an ASFNer out. I'd really like to see a thread like this one blossom into 10 pages of drunken Mexican Spring Breaks.
Maybe I'm missing something here...but is the Official Travel Thread all about getting real wasted real fast??

Yeah I'm not much of a drinker either. I'm a really well behaved Catholic Boy. I know what you mean about the crowded and touristy stuff. One time I went to Cancun for Spring Break, and I decided to check out a bar. To my chagrin, it was full of young, drunk, ladies. I didn't like all the noise...so I invited a few of them back to my suite. There we settled down and played a nice game of Scrabble.

Actually is was Twister sans clothing.

We've never been there & we'll be there for 5 days in early May. Does anyone who has been there have any good places to go/see?
We've checked out some places on line, but if you have some good ideas, I'd be happy to hear them
If you don't already have someplace booked, I'd highly recommend staying at one of the hotels near Playa Bonita Rose (I know the name because I stayed there last year). Google it. There are about half a dozen hotels right next to each other on the beach, and those are the hotels from which you can walk into town--there are many bars right there on the sand, etc... It's definitely the best location--some hotels are a ways away, and you'll end up cabbing it all the time. And beware the other side of the peninsula--you can't go swimming due to the surf.
And beware the timeshare tours--they'll offer cash or free parasailing, etc..., but it'll take half the day despite what they say. We met a few people down there who take those tours regularly to save money on the trip, but they're best avoided if you don't need the cash.
