Sunday night I stopped by Circle K to get a soda and a candy bar. While I was leaving I noticed two guys in a pick-up. Both looked to be in their mid-twenties. The passenger got out and the driver proceeded to back his vehicle in to a parking space around the corner of the store.
I immediately knew that they were doing a beer run from my experience as loss prevention. So I sat in my Jeep to watch. Sure enough the guy went straight back to the beer cooler. As he walked to the clerk with two thirty packs, he started running for the door. I hopped out of my Jeep and met him as the front doors closed behind him. I yelled at him to get back inside while I shoved him back through the doors. As I pushed him through the doors I leg swept him and the beer went flying. I landed on top of him with my hand clenched around his throat. His eye were like saucers and he was making choking sounds. I told the clerk to call the police as I tried to get him on to his stomach. He started to get up before I could get my leg hooks into him. As he stood up, I put him in a head lock from behind and body slammed him back to the floor. As I restrained him, he was cussing up a storm and pretending to be getting choked, but I wasn't letting him up. He even started trying to pinch my arm. I started laughing and told him that it didn't hurt. I held him down until the police got there, which seemed like an eternity. Apparently his get-away ride bailed on him once he saw his buddy get rocked
I had to deal with a chick cop while she lectured me about how dangerous my actions were and that Circle K probably wouldn't even prosecute. I told her that I couldn't watch a crime being committed while I knew I could do something to stop it. Of course, after the guy was cuffed he started threatening me and said he was going to come find me. I'm so scared. What a douche.
I apologized to the clerk and to the crowd of customers that had gathered. The clerk thanked me and tried to give me some money, but I refused. I also thanked the police and told them to stay safe.
Score one for the good guys. Hopefully he learned his lesson. I had to take a shower when I got home because I had that guy's stink all over me.

Otherwise I really can't see why you would do that?
I mean you obviously did a good job, but why?
Right, you wouldn't catch me doing that for some beer. If it were a rape, assault, murder, etc. I step in. If it is for beer when the store won't even prosecute anyway. No way in hell.

Exactly.

No I don't work for Circle K. I just hate thieves. Stealing is stealing. Don't you wish you could do something about that punk who stole your car stereo, or the guys who robbed your house? The jackass took something that didn't belong to him. Whether it's from a big company or a little old lady is not the point. I feel that it is my duty as a citizen to stop a crime if I have the means to do so without putting others and myself in too much danger. Granted, one could argue that I did endanger the lives of others and myself, however I did assess the risk prior to acting.
Whether you know it or not. Stealing/shoplifting is an epidemic in Phoenix. You may think it is bad, but you truly have no idea how bad it is until you work in the loss prevention industry. If I can do something to stop it then I will.
Maybe if more people would stand up to punks like him, stealing wouldn't be such a problem. You can bet he will think twice before stealing again.

Are you married? How would your wife feel if you were maimed, or murdered because you tried to stop a beer run when Circle K doesn't even care enough to prosecute?

I'd be mad that he didn't casually walk in front of the truck while they were about to speed away, pretend to get hit, then sue the crap out of 'em.
Nobody in this crowd but Folster would live past 30 if this were Arizona of the 18th Century. If Folster got his butt shot before 30, there'd be a statue of him at the state cap-uh-tohl.
Bravo to Folster, a true Arizonan. (But you're supposed to be packing a gun. I'll let it slide this time).

I hate thieves as well. And yes I would love to help put a stop to it. But the risk involved over a couple of cases of beer is just to much. What if that guy had pulled a weapon?
Bravo for your act and you obviously did something very good, I'm not denying that, it just seems that the risk /reward factor wasn't there.
Unless you consider having a hell of a story to tell for the rest of your life reward enough.
