I was just wondering if anyone out there thinks one of their friends is an alcoholic but is afraid to say anything?
Well, yeah, I know a lot of alcoholics who don't think they are alcoholics. Alcoholism runs in my family and some of us (me and my cousins) are very conscious about that and make sure that we keep ourselves in check.
Alcoholism is a tough thing. I'd suggest checking out the Alcoholics Anonymous website. I'd also check out Al Anon as well. It's hard to confront someone who you think has a problem. These organizations will help you with that.
My cousin has been sober for three weeks. That might not seem like a lot for a lot of people, but it is a major accomplishment for him. He has always had a drinking problem, as did his father (a result of being in Vietnam). My cousin has tried sobriety a few different times. I find you gotta support people every single time they go for it.
I've also found that you can't MAKE someone get help. You can talk to them and encourage them, but they ultimately have to take the steps to get sober themselves.
Keep the lines of communication open and don't judge. That should help you and your friend. Good luck!
Meetings aren't for everyone. My dad said going to them made him want a drink more.
He's been sober since 1993.
NICE!!!
My cousin has said that meetings don't work for him either (similar story). But sometimes they seem to help those who aren't the ones with the problem.
I think half this board is alcoholics but I'm afraid to say anything.
In reality I've been there and it's a no win, if it were me I'd say something, if they get mad at least you tried to help. In the end they have to see it themselves to do any good. MOst have to hit bottom, literally be in jail or lose something or someone before they truly get it.
