Dealer service

Erin's 2007 Camry has just hit the 5k mark and is in need of recommended service, which includes;

Replace engine oil and oil filter
Rotate tires
Visually inspect brake lining/drums and brake pad/discs

There are some additional insepections, but they are N/A since I dont tow or drive on dusty or dirt roads.

My question is, is it better to pay the $79 (minus $10 off coupon) at the dealer, take it to the local import place near my house or take it to a Quick Lube-type place? (poll coming)

How do any of these affect the warranty?

It depends...are the items you noted directly out of the owner's manual, or off a coupon the dealer is pushing? Many times the two simply don't match and you can end up overpaying for unnecessary services. If you only have 5K on the car and no brake issues (noises, sqeeks, etc) I wouldn't sweat it, and get the oil change and rotation done at an independent shop...but hey, that's me.

FWIW, I drive a Nissan and take mine to my dealer for service. They always match local dealer prices, so I search all the local Nissan dealers websites and print the best coupon and take it with me.

$79 just for that?

That's horrible. I went to Sun Devil Auto for my Mustang on Saturday. Lube/Oil/Filter/Rotation,+ coolant flush + break check was $68 out the door. If they don't match coupons, take it somewhere that will certify the job.

DIY. Plenty of resource material available online. You know what you get when you do it yourself.

This would be the end result of me working on a Camry:

Personally, I want the people who know the most about my car to be the one's who work on it.

Take it to the dealer for the major service .. you know, like 30K, 45K, 60K, etc. Other than that, take it to a reputable mechanic or DIY. Regardless, save all paperwork/receipts so that you have a case should the manufacturer not want to honor any repairwork down the line that should be covered under the warranty.

They are ripping you off. Change your own oil and look at your own brakes, but unless she has been driving while holding down the breaks they are going to be fine.

and you can fill out your own paperwork.

At 5k I would get the oil and air filter changed for 20 bux. they will rotate the tires for free. At 5k miles there is no need to dust off the brakes, etc. Just another way to make money. IMO

dealer service = huge ripoff

Find a mechanic in town that comes recommended, way cheaper and just as effective.
