Someone, somewhere decided to steal my credit card number and rack up $1,800 in charges. They went on a shopping spree today at K-Mart, Sears and some photo place. Fortunately my credit card company realized these purchases weren't mine and called me about it. They cancelled the card and I don't have to pay any of the charges.
Grrrr....

I just went through the same thing. The idiots tried to use my Card in Africa of all places. The bank caught that one real quick and cancelled the card. Aggravating though, as I have had the same card number since 1982.

I've had that happen to me, too. Didn't have to pay the charges though.
I think it's kind of cool how the CC company's can tell if it's a "weird" purchase. I had just gotten a new card and used it in AZ. When I went back to Milwaukee for school, I used it to buy a large purchase at Target for apartment things, etc. When the Target girl ran it through it locked and they had to call the CC company directly to make sure it was me who was purchasing all these items 2,000 miles from where I live.
I had never had that happen before... kind of neat, I guess.

That's a good thing. Though I guess it could be an inconvenience when you have to hold up the line.
I've had my bank call me a lot of times to verify charges. Once on a drive from here to South Dakota where we bought stuff here, then in Colorado, then in Wyoming. Got a call then.
Another time when I used it in NY in the morning, then got gas when I got off the plane here and got some groceries on the way home. They didn't like that it was used cross country in the same day.
I like that they are pretty vigilant about that kind of stuff.
I once lost my debit card in a bar a few years ago after a Lakers playoff game in LA, called the next morning when I realized it had been missing and they said that 20 minutes before my call someone had tried to get money out of an ATM with it but the pin failed a bunch of times, so they had already flagged my account and were about to call. It really sucks to have to change your debit card number...terrible inconvienence.

you're usually covered - however, be careful with credit cards as "fraud" can still show on your credit report - even though you didn't do anything wrong
