Cyclops the Cat

Cy, short for Cyclopes, a kitten born with only one eye and no nose, is shown in this photo provided by its owner in Redmond, Oregon, on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005. The kitten, a ragdoll breed, which died after living for one day, was one of two in the litter. Its sibling was born normal and healthy. (AP Photo/Traci Allen)

I saw that a few days ago on drudge. It kind of made me sad. I felt really bad for that cat.

Me too. Poor little thing. Cats predominantly breathe through their noses. It probably suffered a lot before it passed away.

Is this for real? I thought kittens didn't open their eyes for a while after being born.

without knowing anything about the story besides what has been reported in that caption, I would think with such a huge deformity it is possible that the kitten was born without the eyelid?

However, that was a pretty good catch on your part and a good question.

Its almost like during development, the two sides of the face didn't properly form and seperate, so the nose, being inbetween those two sides, never formed.

The AP has stated the picture is real.

The poor kitten was born with only one eye, no eyelid, and no nose. It lived about 24 hours.
