It is interesting, but when you do the math, the number of crimes committed in the higher crime rate areas are fewer than those in the lower ones.
There are 266000 crimes committed in New York compared to 52000 in St. Louis. I guess the odds of being a victim are less in New York, but there are more chances you could be.
There probably is not a real good way to gauge it.
