Avatars and Happiness

Since I've had a couple people ask me why I'm not happy (as it states in my title), I thought I'd share with everyone: I'm not unhappy. It's from the cover of Marvel Comics' Secret Wars #4 (one of the best covers, EVAH!):

Off the top of my head I would guess 1983. Maybe 84?

Googling now...

May of 84 to April of 85. Wow. I'm an old nerd.

I remember riding my bike to 7-11 with my buddy and buying these comics. It was hit and miss buying comics that way because you never knew what was going to be left on the rack. At the time, this was a mind blowing series and format.

This was before huge crossovers and comic book "events" were common place. So, to have all of these characters in the same story was a big deal.

The premise was sort of silly (an all-powerful being took the earth's heroes and villains and placed them on another world and said "have at it."), but it was interesting the implications: Among other things, you got Spidey's black costume from this series and from that, the villain Venom--both to be featured in the new movie.

But the real implication was that now you have at least one big crossover a year...largely due in part to the success of things like Secret Wars and DC's "Crisis on Infinite Earths."

I hope this clears up any remaining doubts about the depths of my dorkiness.
