I'd go with a deep end. It stays cooler a little longer in the summer. Mine's not legally long enough to install a diving board and I still had the deep end put in. Glad I did.
Any pool company that tells you that it's several thousand more dollars to put in a deep end is yanking your chain. My guy told me it was $300 for additional digging and $250 for a board. So basically I got a 8' pool for $300 extra bucks.
It was roughly 12K total. Around 10-11K gallon.
I wanted to punch the guy from Shasta several times, in the face, and very hard. But, I didn't.
Instead I went with Executive Pools on Baseline and Price and was very, very happy with all of it.

I've always said that.
We just had one put in October by Carribean Pools. Were very happy with them. Completed on time, minimum hassles.
80' perimeter
pebble sheen
salt chlorinator
acrylic kool deck
10,000 gal. play pool
Barracuda cleaner
filter (it's not cartridge nor sand, but the other one)
all told about $19,000 which was a little less than Shasta, California or Paddock.

Yeah, I got some Cardinal Kool-Aid but I didn't add the sugar!
I guess you mean the pop-up heads for self cleaner? We had that in our other pool but I didn't think it was all that great and it costs about $2,000 extra.

This homeowner in the East Valley built his pool by being the "General Contractor". His site is one of the most comprehensive undertakings I've ever seen.
I don't have 7 months to kill...this guys has a nice plan though.
Yeah, the guy has obviously had some free time on his hands. However, the time frame doesn't necessarily have to take as long as his did.
I'm guessing he put between $10,000-$12,000 (I could be wrong) into everything. He did have extras, such as the barbeque, rock formation, salt system, AquaLink, etc.
Two Scottsdale brothers own the company. They did a terrific job on my "play" pool. Pebble tec, rock waterfall, navigator cleaner, auto chlorine (salt water system), cartridge filter. I was impressed with the planning and the subs that they use.
As it turned out, I found out I chose them (I checked out 3 others) one of the brothers is a Phoenix Fire fighter out of Sky Harbor and we have mutual acquaintences.
Let me know if you want to check out the pool. I live in South Tempe.

If this guy can do it, so can I.
Hey Sly, what kind of services do you offer? I am gathering my sub quotes now.
I went to Presidential Pools over the weekend, $44,000 for what I want. I told them to fly a kite. So far, I am approx $15K lower than that with some "ball park" estimates and I am getting a better product. *fingers crossed*
We're a service and repair company that predominantly serves the Paradise Valley, Scottsdale, Arcadia, Phoenix, and Arrowhead areas.
You've made the right decision in doing this yourself. Be sure to do your research on the type of equipment you need or want. You will also be able to find some pretty good prices on the web. In fact, you'll be paying close to what your subs would be paying for them.
Have you you decided on what you actually want? AquaLink, salt system, auto cleaner, pumps, filter, filter type, plaster/pebble tec...??
Here are some recommendations for manufacturers:
Filter: Pentair (Sand or D.E., no cartridge)
Heater: Raypak RP2100
Pump: Pentair WhisperFlo
Auto cleaner: Hayward Pool Vac (if you decide suction-based)
Auto cleaner: A&A/Magnasweep (if you decide pop-up return-based)
Salt: NatureSoft/Aqua Rite (same type, different name)
Location: Sun Devil Stadium, Sect 27, Row 34, Seat 8

A$FN: 4,008
Thanks again...I have about umpteen pages of equipment prices. I have found a bunch of websites with good deals. Do you recommend going this route or shopping directly in the local stores?
Here's the equip I am leaning towards:
Hayward pumps (northstar I think)
Hayward 400,000 btu heater
Hayward Navigator cleaner
AquaLink system
Sand filter
Clear Water salt chlorinator (self-monitoring)
I will put up my pool design soon. I just picked up my structural steel drawings from the engineer & I will finish my electrical plan & my gas plan this weekend (propane system since I have no gas inthe neighborhood).
