If I was in AZ, I'd still be living at home for that very reason. I pay $1175/month right now for a 1 BR (albeit a very nice one).
I'll probably end up buying something once my lease expires in February. There's a city program here that gives you a $30,000 99-year deferred repayment loan. The state also offers below market financing with no PMI or minimum down payment.
