What is a Chickflick??
The reason I bring this up, besides reading KOC post on True Romance, is I got into a heated discussion recently about Thelma and Louise NOT being a chick flick.
What classifies a chick flick?? Here are mine with examples
For a movie to be a chick flick it must have the following criteria:
1) Centers around women or womenly things such as weddings, pregnancies or romance (My Best Friends wedding, Sleepless in Seattle, 9 Months)
2) Unrealisticly charming men who sweep a woman off her feet (Pretty Woman, Maid in Manhatten)
3) You feel the urge to cry, BUT there is no sports or dying animals involved. For example, it was uncool for a guy to cry in Steel Magnolias when Julia Roberts died...but you could open the flood gates in "The Rookie" when Dennis Quaid pitched in his first major league game.
4) Violence, killing and distruction are at or near zero. If they mention sex, it is done tastefully and there is usually never nudity.
That brings me to Thelma and Louise:
Obviously it centers around women, and womenly things (going on a girly vacation together)...but then it turns violent, people end up dead there is violence, violence against women and a hot sex scene.
Based on your own personal criteria...is T and L a chick flick or not. If I stick to my criteria, it is NOT...but I still call it one
...any other movies that are teetering on the edge? KOC brought up True Romance....guy flick all the way.

Mike heard it had a "chick" terminator (and Claire Danes) and he said "I'm there!"
I think he said something like "The only thing that would have made this movie better would have been Sandra Bullock."

I would say that a true chick flick will fall within your list Ryan.
However, it is the middle ground. Consider Pearl Harbor, which I have grown to consider a chick flick. It has all of your examples except 4. But directs itself back to #2. Plus heroic women throws it off the ship.
I believe in order for it not to be called a chick flick, you have to be able to pop it in to the vcr/dvd, in the middle of the woods during a poker party. Otherwise it might be consider a chick flick. True Romance as much as I love it, does not fit that bill. The utter name of it, forbids it.

That is the funniest thing I've heard today! So true.

I consider a chick flick something you can't watch in the company of other men. Chick flicks are perfect date movies or movies for women to watch together. Would a group of women during their "girl's night out" get a twelve-pack and pop in Commando? I think not!

T&L is a chick flick, I believe, although it's an "empowering" chick flick, which is why it includes guns and death and hot Brad Pitt. (Okay, so that last one doesn't make it an empowering chick flick, but Brad Pitt .... yummmmm.)
But I digress.
Good criteria there, Ryan!
Okay, so here is a question. What about a movie like Jerry McGuire? Could that one go either way?

Jerry Maguire and Singles were both very cool movies that dealt seriously with relationships. Jerry Maguire had sports (more specifically - the Arizona Cardinals) and Singles had grunge rock as their backdrop to make them more accessible to men. Without either of these elements they'd have been full-on chick flicks but I think it was a good move on Cameron Crowe's part to include those themes.
I'd say both movies avoid the extreme sappiness of a chick flick and make a more realistic love story (once again, more accessible to men).
Another movie that's kind of questionable is one of all time favorites, Beautiful Girls.

Chick FLick: (From a guy's perspective)
1) When your wife/significant other wants you to see it and inwardly you moan resignedly!
2) Any movie your hear women just gush over and you think, "That stupid movie?"
3) Any movie you go to and the ratio of women to men in the theater is like 8 to 2!
4) Movies that women find empowering or overly romantic, even when you point out "Well Honey, Julia Roberts played a WHORE and Richard Gere ruined thousands of lives unemploying people and basically bought Julia's affections until he emasculated himself in the end. Other than those plot flaws, I really enjoyed Pretty Woman, Honey."

Chick Flick, Brain Freeze Added To Dictionary
PORTLAND -- Eighteen words are now officially part of the English language, added to the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.
Among the new additions are bikini wax, brain freeze, chick flick, civil union, SARS and Wi-Fi.
Merriam-Webster's has an ongoing list of 17 million words that are considered every year for the dictionary. They say it takes about 10 years for a promising word to get into the dictionary, but some make it quicker if they're important.
