When Joaquin Phoenix walks the line in a Johnny Cash biopic, it will be in plastic cowboy boots.
The moody actor is a staunch animal-rights supporter, and drove the wardrobe folks a little batty by insisting on wearing an entirely “cruelty-free” wardrobe, says a source.
“He refused to wear anything made of leather,” says a source. “So even Johnny Cash’s signature cowboy boots had to be approved by PETA.”

Damn Kate, you are as bad as I am with female actresses.

Hey, if he can't even wear the same kinds of clothes as the man the movie is about, I don't think he should have the opportunity to play the part. Like me saying I'll play the role of Claudio in Much Ado About Nothing (who cannot have a beard), but I want to keep my beard. Ah, DUH, not happening. Too bad Phoenix's boots weren't made for walking, right off the set.

I'm checking it out, but Joaqin Phoenix (sp?) is a putz. Should've been replaced. Refused to don the wardrobe until they made it all plastic, because he CAN'T wear leather

There's been a lot of stuff going on here since they began the whole project. It's cool how they transformed the street and some other places they shot around town.
Awesome movie! Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon are superb. Phoenix sounds just like Johnny Cash, especially on songs like Stripes, Cocaine Blues and Ring of Fire. Witherspoon and Phoenix are both Oscar-worthy with these performances.
One of the few films I've been to where the audience actually applauded at the end. Definitely check it out.
