Tree of Life (Malick)

I'm really looking forward to this one. I love Malick's films. There may not be a director out there that makes more beautiful looking movies today.

I think a lot of his movies don't do well in the box office for a couple of reasons: 1) they're not for everyone; meaning, they're not fast-paced shoot 'em ups. 2) they're not marketed right. I think sometimes the studios try to make them look like they're going to be more mainstream and then when audiences get something different then they were expecting they're repulsed (see Thin Red Line for a perfect example of this; audiences were led to believe it was another Saving Pvt Ryan, and it was 180 degrees different then that).

FTFY

Agree about Malick. I'll watch any movie that he directs.

I'll do you one better: I just watched the movie and I have no idea what it's about.

This one was REALLY self-indulgent on TM's part, I think.

Beautifully shot (as always), but really esoteric. There was a 30 minute chunk at the beginning with dinosaurs and explosions in space.

At the end he seemed to just be throwing random images at you. When a masquerad mask was sinking in water the person I was watching it and I both groaned out loud. It's a 2.5 hour movie that never really got out of act 1.

I think TM is the worst director in Hollywood. Great cinematographer, terrible storyteller.

God-awful movies are still God-awful, even if they look real pretty. And he's ruined more movies that had potential with his self-indulgent, lingering shots than I can count.

To me, he's the other extreme of Michael Bay's "all style, no substance" method. He tries to let the style convey substance, even when there is none to be had.

Let the record show that I strongly disagree.

5 out of 5 for music

5 out of 5 for visuals

point 5 out of 5 for a totally nonsensical, boring movie.

I you can't sleep watch this god awful boring seudo-intellectual wannabe abstract movie with lack of plot.

Just awful, turned it off after 15 minutes and would have left the cinema at that point.
