The Pianist
Roman Polanski's new film is his best since Chinatown.
It's the story of a Jewish pianist, played VERY well by Adrien Brody, who experiences the Warsaw Ghetto from 1939 to 1944. It goes in a very sequential order as he becomes more and more destitute, while trying to keep his sanity.
This is a very brutal film--the Germans are portrayed as total monsters, and the violence is very graphic and difficult to watch.
I was reminded of Schindler's List, but while that film is a lot wider in scope, The Pianist is more a subtle character study, and it is very effective in it's portrayal of the lead character, the Germans, and the burned out and destroyed buildings of Warsaw, Poland.
Highly recommended, and quite possibly one of the top 3 films of 2002.

Just returned from it - absolutely amazing movie. I'm such a sucker for movies about real people and events, this was just spectacular. I'm especially glad to see that it was nominated for Best Picture - it is well deserving and Adrien Brody is just great. I was highly impressed.
Next up - it's going to be either Chicago, Gangs or Schmidt next Saturday.

We finally saw The Pianist tonight...all I can say is wow.
Did Brody deserve the Best Actor or what? That movie was spectacular, sad, depressing and inspirational all wrapped into one.
Loved it.

Watched this over the weekend. What a great flick. The bombed out ghettos of Warsaw were depressing.

I think the fact that someone had to turn this thread into a gay porn hijacking is rediculous...

I thought Brody's performance was one of the best ever. I need to watch this again, it has been a while.

Adrien Brody lost 14 kg (31 lb) for the role of Wladyslaw Szpilman by eating a daily diet of two boiled eggs and green tea for breakfast, a little chicken for lunch, and a small piece of fish or chicken with steamed vegetables for dinner over a six week period. Initially his weight was 73 kg (161 lb).
