Matt Damon on The Bourne Ultimatum Source: Empire Online
March 14, 2005
Empire Online talked to Matt Damon at the 2005 Empire Awards and he gave an update on the third film in the Bourne franchise, The Bourne Ultimatum.
"We'll probably do that in about a year and a half," he says. "We're all signed on in principle, in the sense that we've all agreed that we want to do it, but we're not going to do it unless we have a great script. It's ours to lose at the minute, and if we do make a third one, we want to make it as good as the first two. And if we can't do that, then we're going to have to let it drop."
The original Robert Ludlum novel "The Bourne Ultimatum" saw Bourne finally face off against his long-time nemesis, Carlos the Jackal - a character excised from Doug Liman's The Bourne Identity and therefore unavailable for the third film. "Yeah, all that stuff with Carlos being actually caught. It's kind of a Cold War story. We're essentially retaining the title, so it's going to be called 'The Bourne Ultimatum'. But we don't know at this point what the hell that means! So if you have any ideas for a script, then please..."

Too funny. They went away from the books so much that the third book is basically useless when it comes to the storyline for the third film.
See, with this, I don't mind as much that they left the books. The Cold War is obsolete, and the storylines needed updated. I kind of wished they hadn't killed his wife, but only captured her, like in the books, but what's done is done. I'll still look forward to the third film.

Damon Ready to Return as Bourne Source: Zap2it
August 26, 2005
Matt Damon, whose The Brothers Grimm opens today, tells Zap2it he is ready to return as Jason Bourne in the third installment, The Bourne Ultimatum.
Although screenwriter Tony Gilroy is the only confirmed participant for the third film, Damon insists that The Bourne Supremacy director Paul Greengrass wants to come back as well.
"There's no reason the third one shouldn't be the best of all of them," says Damon. "That would be the only way to kind of come back and do it, is not just to milk the cash cow, but to make it a proper kind of trilogy and finish it on a great note so that people look back and say, 'You know what, that was a kick-ass trilogy there.' It's not something I would want to do forever, you know."
"Ultimatum" is the third Robert Ludlum adaptation for Gilroy after 2002's The Bourne Identity and last year's The Bourne Supremacy.
The two previous "Bourne" pics have together grossed more than $500 million worldwide and been big earners on DVD for Universal.

These movies have been good, and I hope the third gets made. WAY different than the books, but necessarily so. Couldn't quite pull off any Carlos the Jackal/Cold War stuff now, could we?

Yeah, I read the first book earlier this year, and was shocked at how completely different it was...
But there really was no way they could fit that into a movie.
Stout, funny how that's fine with you, but you got so upset at LotR
Bourne Franchise to Exceed Three Films? Source: MTV
February 16, 2006
With the Jason Bourne franchise having earned over $500 million worldwide already, producer Frank Marshall tells MTV that he doesn't expect The Bourne Ultimatum to be the last film. The third film, again starring Matt Damon, is scheduled to start shooting on August 1st and is based on Robert Ludlum's last book in the series.
"It's kinda up to Matt [Damon]," Marshall said. "Maybe to five [films] ... At some point, he's gotta find out who he is."
"Ultimatum" will be directed by Paul Greengrass, who helmed the second installment, "Supremacy". The movie is expected to hit theaters in the summer of 2007.
Marshall added that Julia Stiles' character will "be a central character in this. So will Joan Allen and some of the other characters from the last movie."
"Ultimatum" will have two new villains, which haven't been cast yet. The plot of the book focused on an aging terrorist who targets Bourne, leading to his uneasy alliance with the KGB.
According to the producer, writers will be brought in to concoct storylines for life beyond "Ultimatum," with Damon's character discovering his true identity and resurrecting himself a few more times.

Okay, so wait...they completely changed the world of the novels by making it a modern spy flick (as in, modern times), but now they want to go back and have the KGB? Hell, if they were going to do that, why break from the original storylines? Returning to having a KGB makes absolutely no sense. Idiotic! Just keep it modern, and there are no worries!
