Sony's Blu-Ray will have "self destruct feature"

To access the advanced features or transfer your movies over a home network, you'll need to connect your blu-ray player to the internet. If the provider doesn't like what the player reports about your content, they can permanently destroy your player remotely.

Hence why so many companies are backing it. Won't take affect until 2012 though

Yeah, and what happens when they make a mistake? I'll be remote detonating something else...

They'll refund it for you or give you a replacement free of charge. DirecTV has the same thing now, thye force you to hook to a phone line so that if you're using a hacked card then they'll simply zap you.

This isn't anything new

Ryan hit the nail on the head. And no, you do not need a phone line for DirecTV. That is a fallacy that even DirecTV tries to perpetuate. Up until last year, I had DirecTV and have not had a phone line for quite some time. Then they try to tell you you cannot order pay-per-view without a phone line, which is also untrue.

No, this whole deal sounds far too invasive. It should not be allowed under law. What's next? Whenever we buy alcohol, new technology allows the bottle to determine if the drinker is a minor, and can emit a stun charge to knock them unconscious while at the same time sending out the police?

Totally with Stout with this one. If Sony does this, then they truly will make the format war easier, at least in my eyes.

I have over 600 DVD's right now, and have never made a copy of any of them. If someone told me that they would destroy my DVD player if I did decide to make a copy, or use my device in a way that they did not see fit and destroyed it, there would be holy hell to pay.

Sony is the king of this stuff... From everything I have read, including this thread, Blue Ray is the modern day BetaMax... Better format but trying as hard as they can to disassociate themselves from the buyer...

There is another article about 3 months ago that came out stating that video games will be "remembered" by the initial PS3 that they are played in, making the game unusable in any other PS3.

I have not heard any further information about if this will be implemented or not, but if it is the case, you will not be able to rent PS3 games, or borrow them from a friend.

Or play them in a second PS3 should yours ever break or get stolen, thus making you buy the game again. I don't think that would ever fly.

....And knowing PS3's proven track record of stability, that shouldn't be a problem.

I could see them putting something in there that would render the DVD unaccessible, but destroying the player? That can't be legal.

I've had enough of Playstation. PS1-Broke, PS2-Broke, screw em Game Cube hasn't had a single glitch in 2 years.

Agreed. My house went through 3 PS2's and that is about average from what I understand. The gamecube that I got nearly launchtime is still running strong. Another big reason that I will have the Wii at launchtime.
