But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show's questions.

This is a GREAT movie! Saw with two friends based on a rave review I'd read in Chicago, and we all agreed it is just brilliant, and very enjoyable.
Slumdog Millionaire is funny, harrowing, tragic, dramatic, uplifting, cynical. It's got a clean, easy narrative with well-woven essential subplots, and the dialogue is just right, very good cinematography, and exceptionally well-acted and directed. This is an age-old story that crosses (and bends) cultures and genres, it's the clash of modern wealth and ancient poverty that is India -- and I can pretty much guarantee you've never seen anything like it before.
Very highly recommended.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Director Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" was named best film of 2008 by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures on Thursday in the first major award of the Oscar season.
. . .
"Slumdog Millionaire, with brilliant direction by Danny Boyle and incredible performances, shares a passionate story about one man's courage and determination for the woman he loves," said Annie Schulhof, the board president.
Based on the bestselling novel "Q & A" by Vikas Swarup, the film tells the tale of a poor boy in India who gets a shot at winning millions on television game show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" as he tried to reunite with his lost love.
The screenplay is written by Simon Beaufoy, who shared the best adapted screenplay award with Eric Roth ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"), while the film's star, Dev Patel, won the breakthrough performance by an actor.

really a terrific film. definitely not like anything i've seen before. it was not until "the dance" that i was jolted back to remembering they were all actors. some of the movie, if accurate depiction of conditions 18 years ago, were absolutely horrifying interesting looks into a lifestyle that likely none of us can even imagine, much less take for granted as the characters do.
i thought the acting was superb and the cinematography was fantastic.
a great day . . . cards clinch nfc west division and i cap it off with this flick with friends. too bad tomorrow is monday.

Sorry, but if you left halfway through it, then your review of "overrated" isn't that reliable.
This movie is amazing. Definitely my favorite movie so far this year.

Mind putting a spoiler around that, Mulli?
It was a terrible scene -- but they did -- still do -- that there. I have some friends who thought that it was one of the most genuinely disturbing movies they'd seen in many years -- but nevertheless uplifting and remarkable. (If you didn't stick it out, you can't rate the whole movie.)

It didn't hold my interest enoughfor me to finish, to me, that makes it mediocre at best. I know a ton that liked it.

Golden Globe wins for Best Picture, Best Director, Screenplay, and musical score prizes went to "Slumdog Millionaire," the story of an orphan boy who rises from terrible hardship to become a champ on India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," all the while trying to reunite with a lost love from his childhood.

Okay okay, my views on this have changed a little. Great to see the Indians (magic carpet indians) have so much fun.

This was a very enjoyable movie, and I wouldn't be surprised if it wins best picture. Yes, the underlying plot line is a typical Hollywood feel-good love story, but its told in a original way and doesn't really get boring at all, even if you already know how it's going to end.
