Clive Owen on Sin City Source: ComingSoon.net
November 30, 2004
ComingSoon.net interviewed the cast of Mike Nichols' "Closer" and asked Clive Owen about starring in Robert Rodriguez's Sin City.
It was extraordinary. It was Robert Rodriguez, who is like [a] Renaissance man really. He's a complete one-off. I've never met anyone quite like him. He does absolutely everything. He shoots, he edits, he operates, he lights, he composes the music. He's the most amazing cook. He really pissed me off. It's an extraordinary project. He's doing this strip, cartoon, picture book, Frank Miller thing and he's been so faithful. He re-creates image by image by image. To us, it was very weird. We were just standing in a sort of green screen every day, and everything else will be added. It was an extraordinary experience, but my most overwhelming memory is how hugely impressive the whole thing he's got going down there in Texas is I'm in "The Big, Fat Kill" (as) Dwight.

I think I'm drooling...
A movie which is faithful to a Frank Miller comic?!
WOOHOO !!

I saw the trailer for it last night. It looks like a work of genius--Frank Miller's genius, that is. The entire trailer looked like they were his comic book panels come alive.
Really looking forward to this one!

Very dark and captures the look and feel of the comic exactly. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but it is ultra-violent.
Mickey Rourke was amazing as Marv. Willis was okay as Hartigan. Casting Elijia Wood as kevin was genius. Michael Madsen was pretty bad (that's bad as in not good, not bad as in good). Benicio Del Toro was really good.
Bravo to Rodriguez. He pulled off a true comic book movie.

PS--There were about 600 people in line to see the film in a theater that only held about 400. I got there somewhat late (6:30 for a 7:00 show) and looked at the line and figured I'd never get in.
So, I bought a ticket to constantine and walked right into the Sin City theater and grabbed one of the last seats. Yeah, not fair to those who stood in line, but they should have thought of it first.
PS--I also saw the Refreshments' "banditos" video at the Hard Rock where I had a burger and couple of beers before hand. All in all, a very good evening.

Kind of an interesting sidenote:
I recently saw the documentary, Full Tilt Boogie, about the making of "From Dusk to Dawn". The recurring theme through out the documentary was the problems Rodriguez and the producers had with the unions, IATSE and Teansters.
That particular movie was made as an indepentent movie and did not use union labor.eedless to say the unions were not happy. One of the main reasons was because Rodriguez wears so many hats, and does so many things, camera op, etc.
Interesting documentary, check it out if you have a chance.
Fast forward to now.
I saw Rodriguez on The Late Late Show a couple nights ago.
The Directors Guild told him he could not give Frank Miller directors credit, and Tarrantino guest director credit, because there can only be one director of a film, sorry, that's the way it is.
Rodriguez resigned from the Directors Guild because of it.
That took a lot of balls.
Big thumbs up.
Sin City Starring: Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Maria Bello, Kate Bosworth, Steve Buscemi, Benicio del Toro, Michael Douglas, Carla Gugino, Josh Hartnett, Jaime King, Brittany Murphy, Marley Shelton, Christopher Walken, Elijah Wood, Rick Gomez, Jason Douglas, Nick Stahl, Makenzie Vega, Katherine Willis, Clive Owen, Rosario Dawson, Michael Clarke Duncan.
I didn't notice Walken, Buscemi and Douglas in the film. There were a lot of characters, though, and many of them had heavy makeup--like Rourke (Man, was Rourke good), so maybe I just missed them.

I can't wait until some of you see it. i'm interested to know what a "non-fanboy" thinks of it.
(Sorry BIM, that leaves you out. I already know you'll dig it. )
Knew nothing about the comics so I had no idea what to expect, but I loved the trailers for it and the buzz it created so I took an extra long lunch today to see it.
Very violent, but in a good way, you will know what I mean when you see it.
Some very funny moments as well though.
Overall a very good movie. I think I have to see it again becuase just like you, I never even noticed the guys that you didnt see either.
I thought Mickey Rourke, Benicio del Toro, Brittany Murphy, Elijah Wood, Clive Owen did a great job with their characters. Although did not like Rosario Dawson acting job, she's hot but she stunk in this movie.

One of the things the Guild does is regulate the pay scale of directors. In this case, Rodriguez doesn't have to concern himself with pay scales because he gets like all profits from his movies since he doesn't have a lot of high-paid below-the-line talent--he does it all himself. The guy will make a ton of money regardless of whether he is in the Guild.
However, even though it appears he doesn't care about awards (duh), not being in the guild might proclude him from winning anything. Now, many agree that awards don't really matter, and in the scheme of things, it doesn't. What does matter is the marketing that comes from these awards--who cares that a movie won best costume design--it won an Oscar though, so people will see it. Like I've said before, it's all a money-making machine. The one thing that Rodriguez has going for him now is the fact that he will have Tarantino backing him up--I'm not a huge fan of his directing, but he certainly has some power in Hollywood.
