I bought this DVD a while back but never got the chance to watch it--until last night.
This is the Japanese film that the Ring was based on. Actually, "based" is not the right word, the Ring was almost a scene for scene remake of this movie--and only about four years seperate the films when they were made.
Sufficiently creepy, but I thought the American version was probably a little bit more creepy. I love Asian film, but this had a lot of Western sensibilities to it, and I'm not exaggerating when I say this was like watching The Ring all over again, except all the actors had black hair.
Worth checking out for the curious, but since the DVD doesn't have any extras (not even a chapter insert), it might not be worth a purchase, since it's quite expensive.

Agree with you, Chap. The Ring was a superior movie, IMO, and I have a ban on bare bones DVDs in my collection.
For true Ring completists, the book that both movies are based on has been translated and released in the US. While it does answer a few questions about Samara, it is a step down from both films and a tough read.
Anybody seen the Japanese sequel?

If there is one thing that I can say bad about "The Ring" is that it has no staying power for me. Upon my first viewing of the film, I was really impressed with it, and I found it quite shocking as well. But when I watched it a second time, the gold had lost it's luster...this is why I haven't seen "Ringu".

Well, you can say that about almost every horror movie.
Blair Witch was creepy as hell the very first time I watched, but now I think it's a horrible movie that isn't even scary.

Blair Witch Project is a great testament to how important marketing is for an indie film.
Horrror movies tend to not have replay value cause it's hard to scare you twice when you know what's coming up the second time. Horror movies that stand up are ones that can build and hold onto a creepy atmosphere (and ones with exceptionally horrific deaths). The problem with The Ring was that while it was a good movie, it only had a few creepy sequences and maybe two jump-out-of-your-seat moments. Once you know the story of the video and what's going to happen to which characters, there really isn't anything left (which is why I'm curious to know how they did the Japanese sequel)

My bestfriend said that he didn't think it was scary at all

I loved the Ring - so much so that I bought it on DVD. Blair Witch - only the last 5 or 6 minutes of that movie was scary, the rest of it wasn't really worth the time I spent watching it.

I had one big problem with the logic of the script of the Ring.
Why was the little girl in a well in the mountains away from her home? And someone built a house on top of the well?

I thought thats where the mother took her to kill her, when in fact everyone on the island that they lived on assumed she was in a mental hospital. Remeber the doctor on the island, told her that she recommended a hospital to the mother, and she assumed she was still there. The mother used the hospital as her alibi for killing her daughter.
Overall, I loved the movie. Thought it was incredibly creepy.

THANK YOU! That was bothering me, and I was really hoping it wasn't a huge hole in the plot.
