You'd think moviemakers would have run out of new ways of capturing the trials and joys of young love--but director David Gordon Green finds a fresh take in All the Real Girls, a bittersweet small-town romance. By leaving out the usual humdrum exposition of a courtship story, Green cuts right to the little moments that form the high and low points of a budding relationship. It's an impressionistic style aided by the wonderfully spontaneous and unpredictable acting of Paul Schneider (who also co-scripted) and Zooey Deschanel--who look like they're improvising, even though they're not. As in Green's excellent debut feature George Washington, a small town serves as an atmospheric backdrop--this place looks a couple of decades shy of the 21st century. this was on the movie channels a lot, but i could never bring myself to watch it, because the description seemed too canned. i finally did one night and was more than pleasantly surprised. it is funny and heartbreaking, and has the feel of no other movie. if you consider yourself a film buff of sorts, watch it for the imagery alone; it's gorgeous. paul schneider gives a fantastic and endearing performance. i can't say enough about this movie.

Ok Jenna, you've been on point so far with your movie picks. I have not heard of this flick, but I'll watch it on your recommendation alone. You have a great taste in film and I've loved the movies you've selected so far. Hell, I thought I might have been the ONLY person who had seen Roger Dodger...at least I knew that abomb has seen Igby Goes Down because I made him watch it but turned in Roger a day early to force feed my young movie jedi some dark relationship dialouge action.
This one will be watched, and it's all on you if I hate it.
Plus, I just looooooove Zooey....

i love your taste in movies as well. (i'm still mad you posted esotsm before i could!) but really, i highly recommend this to people who like "films," not just movies. if you hate it, i'll reimburse you for the rental, but i'm pretty confident it won't come to that.
