Movie-A-Day #199: Return to Me

Return to Me

Cast: David Duchovny, Minnie Driver, Carroll O'Connor, Robert Loggia, Bonnie Hunt, David Alan Grier, Joely Richardson, Eddie Jones, James Belushi, Dick Cusack, etc.

Synopsis: Bob Rueland, a Chicago building contractor, cherishes life with his veterinarian wife until she is tragically killed in an automobile accident. Meanwhile the family and friends of Grace Briggs, a waitress at a local Italian restaurant, are overjoyed when they learn that Grace will finally get a replacement heart (the heart of Bob's wife). Both Bob and Grace struggle to maintain normal lives after these traumatic events, until fate intervenes and brings them together.

Trivia:

Toward the end of the film when the nuns are admiring Grace's bike, one of them rings the bike's bell. The other nun exclaims, in Italian, "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets it wings", a reference to It's a Wonderful Life (1946).

0'Reilly's Restaurant, where so much of the central action takes place, is actually a Chicago landmark eatery known as the "Twin Anchors".

The zoo mailbox was a production prop that turned out to be a major headache, in that it necessitated the presence of a production staff member to prevent actual zoo attendees from depositing their mail in it.

George Clooney was offered the role of Bob.

The role of Joe Dayton was originally offered to Jon Favreau. He declined, citing the fact that he did not want to portray a supporting character. James Belushi then accepted.

---------------------------------

Last film of Carrol O'Connor and Dick Cusack (father of John and Joan, etc).

My wife and I love this movie. We saw it in the theater and bought the dvd as soon as it came out.

Bonnie Hunt co-wrote the story and screenplay. Plenty of humor mixed in with the drama. Many memorable scenes.
