Sorry this is a little late on Monday but I just flew in from Detroit and boy are my arms tired!
So I thought I'd start us off with one of my faves, Tremors. This is everything that I love about movies wrapped up into one.
Plot: The residents of the extremely small town of Perfection, Nevada discover that giant, carnivorous worms reside beneath the soil of their town. Upon realizing that these worms, nicknamed "Graboids" by the local merchant, track their prey by sensing the vibrations on the ground the residents plan their escape and counterattack.
Sounds like a cheesy horror flick, right? It is, and it's one of the best times I've ever had watching a movie. Still is. The characters are basically caricatures of small town stereotypes. Michael Gross as Burt Gummer is the perfect gun-toting, conspiracy-theorizing hillbilly. Reba McIntire was excellent as his like-minded wife. Kevin Bacon is having a great time as the party boy trying to woo the big city scientist while saving the day.
What separates this movie from others of its genre is the competency of its filmmakers. The effects are spectacular. The pace is quick and fun. Most important, there's a generous helping of humor throughout the movie. Most of this is accomplished through the chemistry of the characters. They did a great job of making these characters believeable and likeable.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. The sequels, featuring evolutions of the "Graboids", as well as the T.V. show on Sci-Fi are certainly fun but nowhere near as good as the first one.

Gotta love the scene when Michael Gross and Reba run out of ammo for one of their guns, and they're like "we're out!", and so they turn to this HUGE WALL of guns, rotfl!
That just ruled...the movie was hilarious, the action pretty good, and you gotta love Kevin Bacon.

Just an all-around fun movie.

I agree. Great flick. Gross yanking that elephant howitzer off the wall was classic. I thought the characters were developed pretty well too. Kevin Bacon is a very good actor IMO (I have never seen Footloose ).

I love the movie too--it's definitely a high-quality B-picture that is very entertaining.
IMO, Kevin Bacon is one of the most underrated actors working in Hollywood today (Kurt Russell is among those as well). Check out his work in Murder in the First, and of course JFK.

Sorry to steal some of your thunder, John
The sequels are a lot of fun but they're definitely a step down from the first. I liked them just cause they're campy action but since they're straight to video obviously the f/x quality is down. Worth a look, though, and they're always on the Sci-Fi channel.
Part 4, which is a prequel set in the frontier days (starring Michael Gross as Hiram Gummer) is due out in October.

Good movie - I really enjoyed this one. I've seen it twice, but it was so long ago I don't remember much of it, only that I did like it. I'll have to re-watch it. They always seem to be playing it on cable.
