Movie-A-Day #108: Scotland, PA

I'll give you the blurb on the box first, as it's succinct:

"Burgers, fries...and a side of mayhem. Welcome to McBeths, where fast food and ambition make up a daily special filled with murder and mystery, 70's style."

Okay, so it sounds like some corny, hokey B rated movie, with only silliness to save it, right? Oh, but wait...

Scotland PA is based upon Shakespeare's classic tragedy MacBeth (at this point I must pause, spin around three times, curse and spit). Instead of King Duncan, we have a Mr. Duncan, Mac's boss (who, of course, used to have donut shops), who seems to snag all of Mac's good ideas. When Mr. Duncan decides to open a burger joint with a drive-thru window, which was Mac's idea, and make his son manager instead of Mac, Mac's scheming, ambitious wife drives him to murder.

This movie has it all. It's twisted, crazy, has a funky guy nicknamed Banko, Christopher Walken as a vegetarian detective named Macduff, death by french fry cooker, Andy Dick as one of the Weird Sisters, and a real location (yes, folks, there IS a Scotland, PA...down I-81, just north of Maryland).

No, Scotland, PA doesn't follow Macbeth (pause, spin around three times, curse and spit) all the way, but no movie of a Shakespearean work ever does, and this one isn't meant to. It's meant to be a creepy, dark and wild spoof of the play, and it succeeds. I give it

January 2001 at Sundance, Feb 2002 in LA/NY. I'm not sure that it was ever widely released...if it was, I never heard of it, and it probably wasn't in Harrisburg. Trust me, Chap, you've got to see it. Blockbuster even has it, as far as I've seen.

I actually saw this flick in pieces. I'm glad you mention it. This definitely a sleeper. Think I'll put it in my Queue at Netflix.com. Just got through with Brazil. Terry Gilliam. Check it out.

Scotland, PA kicks ass. I loved that movie. The guy who plyed the main character was really good, I thought. And, as always, Christopher Walken is...well, Christopher Walken. He was awesome.

Loved this movie - saw it for the first time about a year ago. I've recommended it to several people.

Christopher Walken was great in this movie!

I'm going to have to start visiting the message board more often again.

Oh my. I just saw the box office numbers on " Scotland, Pa.".

BOX OFFICE SUMMARY
Box Office Total: $228,361
Box Office Opening: $43,366
Highest Ranking: 44

BOX OFFICE HISTORY
Week Rank Wkd. Gross Theaters Per Theater Cumulative
1 44 $43,366 15 $2,891 $43,366
5 50 $39,341 25 $1,574 $228,361

That is too bad. Even worse #s than " Things To Do in Denver When You're Dead". 1995

Andy Garcia .... Jimmy 'The Saint' Tosnia
Christopher Lloyd .... Pieces
William Forsythe .... Franchise
Bill Nunn .... Easy Wind
Treat Williams .... Critical Bill
Jack Warden .... Joe Heff
Steve Buscemi .... Mister Shhh
Fairuza Balk .... Lucinda
Gabrielle Anwar .... Dagney
Christopher Walken .... The Man With The Plan
Michael Nicolosi .... Bernard
Bill Cobbs .... Malt
Marshall Bell .... Lt. Atwater
Glenn Plummer .... Baby Sinister
Don Stark .... Gus

Now that is one great cast.

Gross
$529,766 (USA)
£702,433 (UK) (19 May 1996)
ITL 126,606,000 (Italy) (6 April 1997)

Both really good movies, that were too something for the movie viewing public.

Recently watched it. This ranks up there with some of the better dark comedies I've seen. I even thought Andy Dick was funny in this (I usually can't stand him). I liked the Bad Company soundtrack, that was a cool idea.
