Turner Writing Magneto X-Men Spin-Off Source: Variety
December 13, 2004
20th Century Fox has set Sheldon Turner (The Longest Yard) to write Magneto, an action-thriller based on the villainous character played in the first two "X-Men" films by Ian McKellen, reports Variety.
The project marks the second extension of the studio's "X-Men" comic book franchise. The move follows a Fox deal with Troy screenwriter David Benioff to write Wolverine, who is played by Hugh Jackman in the films.
The studio is developing the spin-offs as they separately develop X-Men 3. Simon Kinberg is writing the third installment. Magneto will likely be produced by the "X-Men" duo of Lauren Shuler Donner and Marvel Studios' Avi Arad.
The original "X-Men" film began with a prologue that showed Magneto as a child being led to a concentration camp by Nazis, and that is the period in which the new film will take place. Since the character will be seen almost exclusively in his formative years, it is not clear whether McKellen will be in the film at all, says the trade.
"I pitched a film that is almost 'The Pianist' meets 'X-Men,' about a guy who, after watching his family slaughtered, has an awakening of his powers and seeks revenge," Turner said.
The storyline will heavily involve Professor X (played by Patrick Stewart in the films). That character was a soldier in the allied force that liberated the concentration camps. The professor meets Magneto after the war, and while they bond over the realization that they are alike in their special powers, their differences soon turn them into enemies.

Maybe ...hopefully they'll pull it together better than star wars I...
...I also think Mystique might be able to play a role in the movie since in the comics she actually ages slower than normal humans (mother of nightcrawler) and possibly wolverine.
How could you say there isn't? Even comic book films that are "failures" are making money. Plus, it's not like X2 flopped and nobody is interested--that movie was a huge success. If half the people who went to see X2 go to see this one it'll make money.

I suppose, but I just don't know if the character of Magneto is enough to sustain a movie.
Now, I don't know of his more recents exploits/acheivements (isn't/wasn't he spooning with Rogue or something??), but to me Magneto is not much more than a foil. He's a plot point. I'm not trying to be jaded but if we're going to ride the superhero thing into the absolute ground, can't we find some others to get to first?

I think it would work, especially since it would be a supervillain movie, rather than a superhero movie, from the sounds of it.
Magneto is by far the most popular villain in the X-books. He even had a turn at being the good guy, around Uncanny #200 or so, if I remember correctly. He ran the team with Xavier gone for some time. Then he went back to being the bad guy and removed the adamantium from Wolverine's skeleton...

While Magneto’s Origins are actually quite interesting I don’t know how appealing this type of movie will be to a younger audience. It has the potential to be overly dramatic if not handled carefully... though I suppose that would reflect the comics pretty accurately. That said, im be pretty interested in seeing Magneto’s story on the big screen.
If the movie does well I hope they make a Mystique Origin too. (She’s also the adopted mother of Rogue. An cool tie in if you consider that Rogue and Magneto were a couple for a while. Though im not really sure how they could fit that in considering the way they altered the storyline for the movie.)
If the Magneto movie actually gets made, it’s my prediction that at least one line of dialogue from the script will be able to be posted in the cheesiest movie quotes thread.
By the way, what do you guys think of the casting of Magneto? I assume Ian will be playing him again...

Hmmmmmm...good point. I don't see any online information on the casting of this movie. I really didn't look very hard though. Any thoughts on who would play a good young Magneto?

Potentially...(which I don't think is gonna happen) the WWII setting could bring back alot of characters from the golden years of comics (i.e. captain america, red skull) which might be fun to see.
Sheldon Turner on the Magneto Spinoff Source: XMenFilms.net
January 13, 2005
XMenFilms.net has posted quotes from Magneto screenwriter Sheldon Turner which appeared in a recent issue of Entertainment Weekly:
Turner's intent for the film is to examine Magneto's "psychological roots". The plot will also deal with the character's friendship turned sour with Charles Xavier. The man who went on to form the team known as the X-Men.
"It's going to take place from 1939 Auschwitz up to 1955 or so," says Turner. With that in mind, that would make the film, MAGNETO a 'period prequel' to the X-MEN movies.
Since a major bulk (if not all) of the film will take place during this period, it is doubtful that actor Sir Ian McKellen will return for the film, though there are still possible ways of having the actor in portions of the film. The film will chronicle the character's early life, and what turned him against humans.
