LOTR question?
Watched the Two Towers yesterday and need some help. What is the relationship between Frodo and Gollum? I didn't understand the part when Frodo said his "old" name and wanted to change him back as if he once knew him. Was he a hobbit before? Haven't read the books and don't know much about it, just curious.

I don't think Smeagol was a hobbit (I could be wrong), but he used to be "normal", until the ring corrupted him. Frodo's hope is that even if he ends up like Gollum, there might be a chance that his soul wouldn't be lost.

I had the same question...but I have another. What is the deal with Gandolf? He basically says that he came back to finish this quest...so what happens after they save the world? Does Gandolf die, go to wizard heaven......that part really wasn't explained well

Smeagol was the last of his race I believe. Don't they say (even in the movie) that his race lived under the water?
I can't remember that Gandalf dies in the end..

(SPOILER ALERT about Frodo below, if you don't want to know it, don't read)
The books says that Smeagol was a kind of Hobbit living by the rivers...
And Gandalf wont "die" I don't think, but I do believe he goes to the Gray Havens with the Elves, Bilbo and eventually Frodo.

From the book The Hobbit - I thought they Tolkein explained that Smeagol was from the race of Hobbit's - so he was a Hobbit. Not the same Hobbits that live in the Shire - but they did live along the river to the East of the Shire.

Smeagol didn't live under water. He came from a race 'not much different than hobbits' I think the book says. The reason Frodo can say these things about him is because his uncle, Bilbo, had all kinds of adventures involving Smeagol, or Gollum, and has related the information.
**********Gandalf Spoiler************
I didn't read the parts of Silmarillium I'm supposed to have, but I have one friend who's a complete nut for the series. He said Gandalf and the other 'wizards' are a kind of a race of angels, though the word is too religious. They're kind of like immortals, but if they die, they get sent back or something strange. I'd suggest reading and finding out.

You know what, I think you're right. Now that you mention it, I think Bilbo always tried to say it was a birthday present, but Frodo suspected he wasn't truthful. Well discovered, KofC!

Gollum (or Smeagle if you wish) is a Hobbit. Frodo (et. al.) is known as "Shirefolk", Gollum's people are known as "Riverfolk".
Mention of it was made in the first film "The Fellowship of The Ring".
I will not spoil any of "Return of The King". If you want to know what happens to Gandalf, and can't wait until the film's release...
read the book!
