Stout, I just wanted to tell you that I just re-read the Lord of the Rings and realized how much stuff was changed.
But for the most part, I think all of it was warranted...except for a few things. Like they could have shown Pippen and Merry grow taller, and also grow up a little bit...
Anyways, one of the main themese of the book is the fact that Aaragorn knows he's destined to be King, and has no problems with it.
But I like the movie showing that he was worried, since Isildur took the ring for himself...that was good. I don't think the movie has the impact it does if he knows all along what's probably going to happen.
However, one thing I do want to say, was that after reading the Scouring of the Shire at the end, I actually realized how good that part is. The hobbits left the Shire naive and child-like, and return warriors and clean up the town without much trouble...
That was really cool to see that change, and the amazing thing is, it completely fits their characters by the time the book is almost over. Tolkein's character development was superb.
Anyways, we can discuss other things, but just wanted to let you know I've re-read it (for about the 8th time) and am better prepared to talk about changes from the books to the movie.
Mike

Actually, one correction: Aragorn did NOT want his destiny. He was a reluctant hero but was never, ever going to ignore his duty. In the books, he always felt his blood was lacking.
The main, big problems I had with the movies mostly came from the 2nd movie, although I thought that Frodo 'sending Sam home' in the final movie was really retarted, as was leaving out the scouring.
When the Ents looked at Merry and Pippen, said they wouldn't help, and then the movie cut to another part---THAT was sheer idiocy. Made the Ents look stupid, like, 'Oh, I'm this great and wise Ent who knows and loves my forest, yet I'm extremely idiotic not to realize Saruman is cutting down Fangorn when I've already observed him doing it---d'oh!'
And the whole point of Helm's Deep was that Men must stand alone. Yes, Legolas and Gimli were there, but they were a part of the old fellowship. This was a tie-in with the coming of the age of man...the whole POINT was to show the strength of men...yet Elves suddenly came tripping along
Then you have Gimli turned into little more than a joke machine. He was funny in the first movie, but not completely silly, so that when I saw him fight, I was all about it. He was so completely stupid in the second movie that, when he finally fought, I was like, 'gee, the dummy can fight too?'
And finally, Aragorn falling over a cliff? Yeah, THAT was drama we sure needed No, THAT wasn't time that could have been better spent elsewhere.

Gimili is my favorite character, I hate what they did to him in the movies.
BTW my favorite part in the books and movies is the very first orc attack when they travel under th mountains in the old dwarf city.
When Gandolf reads from the book and says "Drums...Drums in the deep" Then you hear the drums. AWESOME!

I agree...I didn't like the Ent part much either...would much rather have seen them decide on their own to go to war...
I obviously didn't read as close as I could have, or I might have known about the reluctance of Aaragorn.
However, I do seem to remember elves sending troops into battle to help men, but I can't remember where it was...

Nope...no elves at Helm's deep. What happens is that a commander thought to be lost, Irkenbrand, Erkenbrand, something like that, arrives at the dawn and saves the day, and then the Huorns close off the Orc retreat and destroys the army.
