Last King of Scotland

Forest Whitaker in Last King of Scotland
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
April 13, 2005

Forest Whitaker will star as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland, a political drama that Kevin MacDonald (Touching the Void) is directing for Fox Searchlight, says The Hollywood Reporter. James McAvoy also has been cast to star in the film.

Set in the 1970s, the project is based on Giles Foden's award-winning novel that blends history and fiction. It centers on a Scottish doctor who, through a twist of fate, becomes the hand-picked personal physician of the then-new president of Uganda. At first, the doctor is flattered by his new position but soon awakens to Amin's savagery and his own complicity in it.

The project has been in development since 1998. Principal photography is scheduled to start in June in Uganda and the United Kingdom under cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (Millions).

Update:

A Scottish doctor on a Ugandan medical mission becomes irreversibly entangled with one of the world’s most barbaric figures: Idi Amin. Impressed by Dr. Garrigan’s brazen attitude in a moment of crisis, the newly self-appointed Ugandan President Amin hand picks him as his personal physician and closest confidante. Though Garrigan is at first flattered and fascinated by his new position, he soon awakens to Amin’s savagery--and his own complicity in it. Saw a preview for it before Little Miss Sunshine at the Camelview.

Actually looks pretty good. Though the movie seems to focus more on the doctor and his situation rather than Idi Amin and the genocide.

*Side note - movies at the Camelview seem much more enjoyable than at the other places. It's small, but cozy, and then people that go have a better respect towards actual movie watching then in the other establishments.

This movie looks incredibly good, and Whitaker looks as if he's going to turn in one hell of a great performance.

Watched this one yesterday at the AZ Center.

Phenomenal.

Top notch performances from both Whitaker and McAvoy.

I can't believe the movie itself wasn't nominated or McAvoy.

I'm glad Whitaker won the Oscar, but to me acting performances based on real people should be easier to give as the actor doesn't have to create the character but merely emulate that person from written record and media.

But he was Amin, you completely forget that it's Whitaker there.

This performance, Leo's in The Departed, and Owens' in Children of Men were the best acting jobs I've seen for the movies released last year.

Though I have yet to see Blood Diamond and The Queen.

I recently watched this. I was eager to see Whitaker's performance. He definitely was worthy of the Oscar. The movie in general was very good too. Whitaker was downright scary when we start to see his real self get unveiled.

Whitaker was awesome.

The movie itself was good, not great.

I just saw this on DVD. Forrest was awesome! The movie itself, was good. I liked Blood Diamond and The Departed better (as far are "heavy" movies go).

I kept thinking "why, oh why did you have to bed the king's wife, you dummy!"
