Kung Fu Headed for the Big Screen

May 24, 2006

Warner Bros.-based Legendary Pictures is bringing Kung Fu to the big screen after acquiring film rights to the 1970s TV series from series creator Ed Spielman.

Variety says Legendary has optioned a screenplay from Spielman and Howard Friedlander, also a writer on the original series.

The film is expected to explore the events on which the TV show was based and the origins of the main characters.

David Carradine immortalized the lead role of Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin monk who flees China for the American Wild West, where he helps the powerless.

Hughes Bros. Directing Big Screen Kung Fu
Source: Variety
November 2, 2006

Directors Allen and Albert Hughes will helm Kung Fu, the big screen adaptation of the 1970s classic TV series for Warner Bros.-based Legendary Pictures, reports Variety.

Legendary's Thomas Tull, Scott Mednick and Jon Jashni are producing; series creator Ed Spielman executive produces.

Cory Goodman (Priest) will rewrite a script by Howard Friedlander -- a writer on the original series -- and Spielman. The Zen spirit of that David Carradine series will be preserved in the film, which is on course for a production start next year.

Legendary and WB will co-finance. The goal is a 2008 release.
