Das Experiment
Or, as the case at Blockbuster said, The Experiment. This stars the male lead from the German hit movie Run Lola Run, Moritz Bleibtreu, and he puts in an exceptional performance.
The plot is a controlled experiment, with half of the 'lab rats' becoming the guards and half the prisoners. The guards are given the prison rules, and they are not allowed to use violence to enforce them. 'The Experiment' gets out of hand and what results is truly a horrific vision of what human nature can evolve into under the wrong circumstances. Daring, innovative, in-your-face and stunning. Chaplain, I believe you'll like this one.
If you don't like movies in German with English subtitles, then you won't like this movie. Still, you should check it out, because it is well worth the extra effort.

Re: Das Experiment
I've seen the trailer a few times, and it looks very intriguing... I was unaware it was even on video yet--I'll have to check it out!

Sounds like it's based upon the real-life experiment that Dr. Phillip Zimbardo conducted at San Francisco University back in '69 or '70.
It was supposed to last 2 weeks...they had to call it off after a few days.
It changed the Experimental Code of Ethics of Psychology Departments around the country. But it didn't bring about any sort of change in the actual prison system!
Very disturbing to see how "normal" people can fall right into their designated role in such a situation.

Very disturbing indeed...I was waiting for one of them to give the sig heil (spelling?)! It was a 14 day experiment, and no, it was not called off, so use your imagination!

Ah the "Zimbardo (is that the correct spelling?) Prison study"
I watched a video on that in one of my psych classes, and also in my JUS 301 Research in Justice Studies class. It was crazy how, normally docile people could become such vicious guards.
And Zimbardo as the "Warden"....wow, he even got too into the study. That study couldn't be done today.

My bad, should have clarified that a bit...in the movie. I never knew they had at least somewhat of a parallel in real life, though it stands to reason.

Here's the link to Zimbaro's website discussing it...it is a good read when you have the time!

Zimbardo is one of the weirdest guys I've ever seen. He doesn't look like he has changed a bit from the late 60s.
He has a dirty pervert kind of aura, the kind of guy that is an older man that sleeps with 18 year old girls.

My Pysch class featured his video series that was on PBS. I always thought he came across as "Mandrake The Magician".
I kept waiting for him to pull a rabbit out of a hat, or saw a woman in half...

Yep, I've watched the very same film series (very well done, imo).
He does have the look of a magician, now that I think of it. Maybe that's why he looks 20 years younger than he really is.

Perhaps he is from the same planet as Dick Clark?

I agree it's very disturbing. It's amazing how much influence a strong leader can have on a small group, both good and bad.
This was an extremely interesting movie, in a disgusting creepy sort of way.
