Campbell in Talks to Direct James Bond 21
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
November 10, 2004
Martin Campbell, who helped to revive the James Bond franchise with the 1995 hit GoldenEye, is in talks to direct the 21st installment in MGM's franchise. The Hollywood Reporter says the new 007 film would be on track for a 2006 release should Campbell come on board.
Campbell, who is currently filming the sequel Legend of Zorro for Columbia Pictures, introduced Pierce Brosnan to audiences as James Bond in GoldenEye and will have a chance to introduce yet another actor in the role as Brosnan says he won't be returning.
The trade adds that Campbell's contribution to reviving the series in the mid-'90s made him the man for the current job. Campbell followed his first "Bond" outing with 1998's The Mask of Zorro, and went on to helm Vertical Limit and Beyond Borders.
The script for the 21st film, by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (the duo who contributed to both Die Another Day and The World is Not Enough) is said to contain more of the elements of earlier Bond pics than the more recent effects-packed pictures.

It has been confirmed that James Bond 21 will be "Casino Royale," to be released by MGM in 2006, and starring a new Bond.

Director Martin Campell on Casino Royale
Source: New York Daily News
February 24, 2005
Martin Campbell, who directed Pierce Brosnan's first turn as James Bond in Goldeneye, is returning for the 21st film Casino Royale, based on the first Bond adventure written by Ian Fleming in 1953. MGM is targeting for a November, 2006 release.
The director talked to the New York Daily News about the movie, which will feature a new actor as 007. "There are things that will have to be changed from the original novel," says Campbell. "The Cold War elements will have to be reconfigured, for example, but 'Casino Royale' will be a grittier, tougher and more realistic Bond movie.
"We'll be getting away from the huge visual effects kind of films," he added. "In the new film, Bond is essentially starting out in his career, and has just recently become part of the double-0 section."
"The idea is to put a bit of the dash back in Bond. By the end of the movie, the character will have been forged into the wiser, harder Bond we know."

I've never seen Casino Royale, but I do remember a Star Trek: Enterprise episode where they were on the holodeck re-enacting it and got stuck...or something like that.

Now THIS is a re-make that needed to be done!!! The movie was absolutely nothing like the book, and was an idiotic farce.
Also, love that it will be grittier, like the Bond books really were. I love the Bond image in the movies---don't get me wrong---but he's much more realistic in the books.

Technically, it isnt a remake since the original "Casino Royale" wasnt an official James Bond film.

Paul Haggis to Rewrite Casino Royale
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
August 30, 2005
Oscar-nominated writer Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby, Crash) has been tapped to do a rewrite of Casino Royale, Sony and MGM's 21st installment of the James Bond franchise, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson have brought back Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, The Legend of Zorro) to direct his second 007 film. Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who wrote Bond films The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day, penned the previous draft. The search for a new Bond to replace Pierce Brosnan is under way.
The movie's script is based on the 1953 Ian Fleming novel.

Martin Campbell Reveals 007 Details
Source: USA Today
October 26, 2005
The Legend of Zorro director Martin Campbell revealed more details about his upcoming James Bond film, Casino Royale, to USA Today.
The film will be based on Ian Fleming's first Bond novel, which was set during the Cold War and focused on a gambler named Le Chiffre who tries to reclaim a fortune he lost for SMERSH, the Communist secret enforcement unit.
"He has to mount a card game in order to win the money back. Bond is sent in to make sure he doesn't win," Campbell says. The 2006 version eliminates the Cold War setting.
Bond is teamed with female agent Vesper Lynd, who later helps him recover after he is brutally tortured.
"She's the one who forges him into the Bond that we all know and love," Campbell says. "He certainly falls in love with her, and it does change him forever. It's a genuinely deeper relationship. The film deals much more on a personal level with Bond."
While Q won't appear, you'll get to find out why Bond prefers one-night stands, his martini "shaken, not stirred," and why he favors the Aston Martin sports car.

Dench to Return for Casino Royale
Source: Empire Online
November 24, 2005
Empire Online caught up with Judi Dench who confirmed that she'll return in the role of M in the 21st James Bond installment, Casino Royale.
"Yes of course. And I heard today that I'm not going to be in London. I'm going to get to go to Prague and The Bahamas," she said. "They're getting me out of my box. It's a whole film there. I'm very much looking forward to working with Daniel, but I've not even read a script yet. All I know is that we're due to start in February."
It will be interesting to see how she'll again play M, since this film takes place much earlier in 007's career. Daniel Craig is taking over the role of Bond in the movie, to be directed by Martin Campbell (GoldenEye) for a November 17, 2006 release.
Dench has played M in the last four Bond movies opposite Pierce Brosnan.
-------------------------------------------
That's the first thing I thought. Kind of odd to keep her in that role when you're trying to reinvent/restart Bond.

Daniel Craig on Casino Royale
Source: MTV
December 27, 2005
Daniel Craig talked to MTV about playing 007 in the upcoming 21st James Bond installment, Casino Royale, to be directed by Martin Campbell.
"['Crash' writer] Paul Haggis has done a rewrite of the script and has written great dialogue," Craig said. "The lead girl part is fantastic, the characters are all fantastic. It's a Bond film. We're making a Bond movie first and foremost."
He added that the film will be "very different" from past Bond movies, but that "it will have certain elements that will make it a Bond movie." "The cars are newer too," he laughed. "There's a lot of similarities with the book but yes, of course it's been updated. It has to be. It's a suspension of disbelief that we're renewing Bond, and that this is the first time you see him."
Casino Royale is scheduled to open on November 17, 2006.

McAdams and Newton Rumored for 007
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
February 1, 2006
Although Sony's Casino Royale started production in Prague last Friday, the film is still missing a leading lady and a villain, says The Hollywood Reporter.
A source familiar with the Martin Campbell-directed production told the trade that scenes involving James Bond's love interest don't begin for more than a month, and the studio still has some breathing room before compromising the film's schedule.
"They're talking to three to four girls right now," "Royale" screenwriter Paul Haggis said. "Every week I read there's a new Bond girl, and I call them and they say, No, you idiot."
Daniel Craig was cast as Bond in October, leaving the remainder of the cast a mystery. In recent days, Rachel McAdams and Thandie Newton have emerged as possible Bond girls. The trade added that the casting of the villain is much further along than that of the female star.
