Not crazy about the sequels, but the Matrix stands alone as perhaps the best movie of the 90s. An excellent representation of my generation of filmmakers. It might as well represent the 90s itself: The technolust, digital/alternative realities, the angst that something isn't quite right, a fear of recent history, an unstated-but-commonly-shared desire for a Christ-like hero. Oh yeah, and kick-ass karate scenes. That was common place on my college campus. We just walked around all day doing roundhouse kicks to each other's heads.
