Blogging 101: Tagging or Categories

Posted September 19th, 2007 at 09:32 AM by Mike Olbinski
Okay, so you are going along writing your blogs about pets (jw7), or fake sports teams (Djaughe) or even your pure sexiness (Gee).

But what category should they be in? What are they about?

The Blogging world we live in is heavily based on something called "tagging". When you write a blog, it has a subject. Let's say someone writes a blog on dogs, specifically about boxers and poodles.

To make the blog easily found on the internet, you place it in categories, These are kind of like keywords. So for this pet blog, you might put it in the categories: dogs, boxers, poodles

Then when people search on Google, or Technorati, for those keywords, your blog will be easily found.

Our blogging software calls this stuff "categories". It's still tagging. So how do you do it?

Create categories:

1. Go to your Blog Control Panel
2. Go to Blog Categories
3. Add categories.
4. Go to Post Blog
5. Write your blog
6. Choose categories for it.
7. Post!

It's that easy. You can also go back now, add categories and then fix your old blogs so they care categorized. Right now, most everyone's says "uncategorized".

Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions.

How do I put my blog into a category after the fact? I can't figure out a way to do it.

Go to your Blog post, and there is a little Penicl icon next to the number of comments at the bottom of the post.

Then click that and you should be able to select categories there. I think.
