This sucks bad!

    Well guys, I'm sitting here almost in tears. I am soooo bummed out. I went to the podiatrist Monday last week and he put me in a night splint, took more xrays to rule out a stress fracture and put me on physical therapy 3 days/wk for a month. Ok, so that's not so bad. But here's the bad news. He wants me to stay off of it as much as possible. I started PT this past Monday and it hurt like hell. He went really easy on me too. I told my PT I think it's time for a 2nd opinion as this injury began July '04. He recommended a new Dr to go to - the Phx suns & Mercury Doc. Unfortunately I can't get in til Nov 7. Appt made, but here I sit. My PT is concerned I might have a form of arthritis in my big toe joint. Hurts ike hell & I can't walk very far w/o major pain. This, plus plantar fascitis and tendonitis along the top of my foot, 4th toe to ankle. I am so upset. I told them about the 3-day and they both just kinda shook their head. Said they know I couldn't go the full 60, but I may be able to do SOME each day. I am so sad. Why now??? This sucks!!!!!

    My team captain said, "It's not about walking. It's about fundraising and raising awareness for breast cancer. And you're doing that. Don't stress about the walk. If necessary, you can be on the team crew." Well, that's all well & good, but that's not what I signed up for. Dangit. Now I'm crying. All done for now. Please pray for a speedy recovery and that they figure out for sure what it is. Thanks for letting me vent, guys. You're the best.

    Stay strong, and get healthy - I donated money for you, and the cause - walking is secondary.

    I have no medical skills...but could it be the shoes yer using?

    My wife was training for a marathon and had a bone spur at the base of the heel.

    She went to a specialty shoe store in tempe and they measured her feet dimensions to get her something that fit closer to the contour (give better support).

    She still felt the bone spur (but it didn't hurt as much) and finished the marathon.

    I've been fitted twice. Both times by a guy at Runner's Den who has run 150 marathons. Hopefully he knew what he was doing. Do bone spurs show up on an xray? Would my doc have seen it if it was there? My chiro also want me to have blood work done to rule out gout. Good Lord, isn't that an old people disease???

    I'm not saying bad shoes caused yer problem...I'm suggesting that perhaps getting shoes that fit the contour of your foot might ease the pain.

    But you've already been fitted...so I don't think getting another refit is going to help. Sorry.

    btw...bone spurs should be detectable through x-rays...but I never heared of one on the big toe (unless you kicked something :) ). I was just using that example to illustrate a point.

    I understand. It doesn't hurt on the tip of my toe, but on the side, in the joint. Like where a bunion would be. I have professionally made orthotics but they don't seem to help much. I wear them in my running/walking shoes.

    My foot started hurting after a running incident last summer in Iowa. I thought it would just go away so I didn't see a Dr for about 2 months. Had cortizone shots every 3 weeks for 4-5 months or so. Helped at the moment, but wore off & would hurt again. Usually worse than the previous time.

    I'm so frustrated. :mad:

    I am sorry to hear this. Keep your head up and try to think positively.

    For the plantar fascitits - wear the night splint! I know it sucks but it really help if you wear it. Follow the instructions of your PT - do all the exercise they perscribe and it will get better!

    For the big toe - I have a similar problem. :mad: Have your PT check out your orthotics to see if they are still appropriate for you - sometimes they may need to be adjusted. Really focus on stretching the muscle of your calf. Stretch your calf with your knee straight and your knee bent - there are 2 different muscles that make up the "calf" muslce.

    Lastly, if you do a lot of running or walking I would recommend a foam roll for you to do some self mayofascial release (fancy word for massage). Concentrate on your calf, peroneals and anterior tibialis with this. Here are some articles. This may look like a joke but believe me it works. The Suns athletic trainers have the players do this stuff.

    If I lived in Phoenix, I'd put you in a big wagon and roll you around the walk! :)

    I run off and on all my life. If it's a toe break, like sometimes they can't see cracks in the bone, then time off it will heal it. Plus there's nothing they can do for hairline fractures anyway.

    Bone spurs and the rest should be seen on xrays.

    Maybe a rhuematologist or someone like a nerve doctor should take a look at it if the PT doesn't start to work.

    You're not THAT far away! Bring that wagon & let's get movin! lol. :D

    Going to primary care physician this week to see about blood work for possible gout. She may run an arthritis lab as well. Will keep you posted.

    It's official

    Was in PT yesterday and he was trying to massage my foot. I just about jumped off the table in excrutiating pain. He made me call the Podiatrist right then & there, got in for an appt in 5 minutes. (Dr is across the freeway from PT)

    So, go see the Doc & he rules out arthritis, rules out gout, says I have the beginnings of a bunion and that's what is causing all the pain. :confused: Tells me to get new running shoes & to stay off foot as much as possible for a week...then he rewards me with a lovely cortizone shot in my big toe joint. :eek: I am telling you...that sucked the big one! Horrifying!!!!! I did labor breathing through the whole thing & it didn't really help. Numbing agent wore off w/in 3 hours and I thought I was gonna die. Worst pain I've felt since childbirth, without a doubt.

    Foot is very swollen. Plantar Fasciatis and tendonitis are improving with the PT, but I'm sore every day. STupid bunion issue is bizarro. I'm still going to the specialist on 11-7.

    So, the last thing he said was, "There is no way you'll be able to train for the 3-day in time." :(

    So, I am signing up for NEXT YEAR. Anyone want to join me??? :shrug:
